I think upgrading from wood/stone tools to metal makes the tools last longer. Does it benefit you in any other way? (Axe down tree faster, etc.)

Crude metal tools need less hits to do the same work, in most cases half as many on top of lasting more than twice as long.

As Fel mentions, typically half as many strikes required, some exceptions, the wiki has tables for comparisons, such as:
