Stacking items in a single pile: is there a limit?
In the spirit of Let's Game It Out: "Is there a limit?" I made a stack of stone that went above the flying camera's ceiling and continues to ascend. How many can I stack? (Disregard frame rate please, I know this will be an issue eventually.)

There is, technically, a limit. But it's so high you won't reach it without modding the game.

It's worth noting that if your bots do something that produces an item, and no bots (including yourself) touch it after it has been produced, it will eventually disappear. This prevents machines producing an infinitely high pile of product.

Limit is 500 objects on a tile. When exceeded the oldest objects will be removed. Everything counts towards the limit but player character, bots, vehicles and reserved items won't be destroyed.

Thanks for the answers.

I found this out when I started building farms with a Tiller bot (dig up turf, dig holes). I suspected that the seeds and sticks were naturally decaying in my forestry zone, but this confirmed it.

Thanks, I was hoping this would be the answer. I wanted to see how fast my system can produce items/tools and where my bottlenecks are, but topped-off storage stops production dead in its tracks.

I am now thinking that I can use a single pile as a way to act as a resource/item sink. Funneling chests into a pile like this would keep production maxed and allow me to see shortcomings in production.

I read there is a structure that allows this, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

Producing objects endlessly is a waste of resources. You need winders to keep winding your bots. Their tools keep wearing out.

Instead, have them put the objects in a box, and write your scripts so that when the box is full they stop. Want a bigger stock of objects ? Make the box bigger.

I think you're missing the point. Please re-read my post above.

I want to make my system run at full throughout to see bottlenecks. You can't do that if chests are full, no matter how big they may be. That is what the sink is for.
