Inventory fills up instantly, nowhere to put items

What do I do? Where are we supposed to store items? Your inventory fills up completely with wood and stone on day one. You need 350 wood just to build a chicken coop, but stacks are only 9. Where am I supposed to store this stuff? Surely they couldn't have overlooked the most basic feature?
