Maybe I missed an explanation at some point, but what do the nanobots in the reset screen do?

Increase production of both evolution and thought points while they're active. Which is not all the time, but for a short time, then an enforced break before you can activate them again.

No, I figured out that part ok. It's when you click on it a second time, they go red and the icon changes. What is THAT doing?

The icon turns red to tell you that the icon can't be used because the nanobots are already active. It turns into a shopping trolley to remind you that if you need more production you can buy it.

when I clicked on it a second time (turning it red), the nanobots changed from earning bits to instead auto-buying (clicking) on the many animals and eras if available.
