Why can't I find any servers?
Literally no servers at all.

Because no one is actively playing. Add me as a friend and we can see if we can get a server going. I assume it is as easy as creating one and joining, unless there are protocols we have to do to get it to work and have others join.

Idk about any protocols.

I call them protocols, as I am not sure of the actual term. Back in the day you used to be able to create a server of your own, simply by using the Create A Server option in Half Life 1 games. Now it seems you have to go the extra mile and download additional things from Steam and set up a server making it more difficult. I am not sure if all games work like that or only some. Also setting up a dedicated server takes money. Even using a player's home made server, depending on their connection, could severally limit the game to several to just a few players, due to pings and what not. I've heard having to have a whole separate rig just on to allow for a server and then another PC to play on it.

Something to think about. If you want we can try to create our own server by using Create A Server and see if we can connect to one another's. It might work. But all the times I have been playing this game with bots, I have not seen one person pop on to mine. Either they are not getting on, I had the server locked by mistake or they simply can not see or can not enter due to the extra things that need to be done. And I have not seen any other servers, made by other people either. I can see mine if I refresh, but when I try to (re)join, it restarts the whole server. But that may simply be because I am the server, so trying to get on what I am already on restarts it. But again we can try.

If someone is willing to walk me through a dedicated server setup, I would be right well pleased to run one myself for everyone's benefit. If we could find a suitable host, I would also be happy to pay for it in order to get this superb game going again.

There is hardly any community traffic here, so I doubt someone will tell you how to directly do it step by step. However there is a guide for this game to do it.

How to setup a Dedicated Server

Here are the steps to setting up a dedicated server:

That will literally just take you to the official site. I think I tried this before and it either got me to where I needed to go or round about.

You can also try in Help and Tips on the Steam forum community page and even Hardware and Operating Systems, since as I said, I think you need a separate PC to be on or pay a server to host it 24/7 or peak times at least.

I've setup a dedicated server today, had no issues with steamcmd, I'd review your configurations and double check your router/firewalls to make sure the ports are forwarded properly.

Port 27015 is the default.

If you require funding. lob me a message and I'll gladly post you a few quid for your efforts.

Is there any danger of a few bots? My problem is running a botserver through a PC that I'm playing on. That seems to be the answer on all the AHLS Q&A pages.

In spite of my Steamcmd update and firewalls off, I get the same old "server is out of date, restart", etc.

That sounds like steamcmd isnt being used to launch it. You can't run it directly using the srcds executable or even through steam. It simply will not work that way and that goes for all of the source dedicated servers.

If you are using linux just follow the normal steps for setting it up and you should be fine, make sure the account you are using also has action: source in its library too.

This might help using SteamCMD as it a GUI solution to that whole process.

If anyone is looking to host using a game server provider just ask and usually they are able to accommodate, instead of HL2DM for example you would just give them the action: source appid to install instead which is: 985050.

Thank you for this! Anyone wanting to get on today or sometime later this week?
:steamhappy: What are the rest of the numbers before 27015 just out of curiously? When I look at the server itself is shows something like this- ##.###.###.##:27015

Just the IP address of the server, 27015 is the port

Howdy, bit of a bump, but I wanted to inform you especially since this is the first topic on the hub, that I just set up 3 Action: Source servers in Miami Florida. I will set up 3 in Seattle and 3 in Amsterdam as well. After some tweaks and twinkles, all 3 of them are appearing on the master server.

Awesome!

I've now taken the servers offline. For the amount of players they have pulled in, and the CPU usage it requires to run bots, there is no point.

There are now 2 servers left. 1 doesn't work (it crashes when you join) and the other I think is 200ms away.
