Why does your score reset upon death in Halo Reach?
So I'm playing Pillar of the Autumn level, and in the beginning I got a nice few kill combos and racked my score up to 500. Then an elite killed me, and I assumed I'd get -114 for dying as usual.

But no, it deleted all my points, set my score to 0, and THEN gave me a -114. So my score now is -114.

It was weird, but I went ahead and got a few more kills, got score up to 600, got a plasma stuck to me and died. My score went to -228. It ignored all the points I'd gotten and subtracted from the negative point score I had after my first death?

Why? This isn't how it worked before, I'm figuring it's a glitch, anyone else facing this?

P. S. I don't have the reset level on death skull on. Playing on Heroic with a few skulls on (Like more nades and higher ranks) for multiplier.

Because if it didn't, you could farm infinite points off one enemy. Kill an elite for 100, die for -50, over and over. Your score resets, but so do all the enemies you killed, so you can get it back. It's worked that way since scoring was introduced in Halo 3.

But why does it stack the negative points then? Score resetting to last checkpoint I get, but it set my score to negative 228, equivalent of 2 deaths. While deleting all my points.

Plus, this didn't happen on my first playthrough of the level.
Death penalties are permanent, because otherwise there would be no penalty. You could die as many times as you wanted at one checkpoint and only lose a single death's worth of points. I assure you it happened like that in your first run and you just didn't notice. It's how scoring has always worked.

No, my score didn't reset to zero on my first run.
When I died, if I had 1614 points, they'd drop to 1500. Just a -114/death.

You're not understanding my point here. My points didn't go a negative number that was the culmination of all my deaths' negative points. 114 would be subtracted from my current score then and I'd retain the rest, like a sensible system.

The resetting your score makes sense but what I don't get is sometimes I just get awarded 0 points for killing anything. I haven't played legendary campaign in a while so I died a lot trying to learn where everything is and I came across this many times

Yeah if you spend more than ~2.5x of the PAR time of any level, you stop getting points for kills, but can still lose points for death.

E.g if Par Time is 20 min, then after 20 x 2.5 = 50min you'll not get points for kills anymore. Prevents people from farming every enemy and point source in the game while ignoring par time.

Best way to beat par score for a level is in Heroic with a few skulls turned on.
