Single Player?
Heya,

I saw this is on sale for a great price. I wouldn't be interested in any of the multiplayer aspects, Is the game playable single-player? And is the story worth it? or is it more of an afterthought for the multiplayer?

Thanks

Halo was originally a single-player or coop campaign experience with multiplayer as an afterthought. But PvP multiplayer eventually expanded into the main selling point for XBOX live when Halo 2 released. Halo 3 and Reach both pushed multiplayer to the limits while maintaining solid campaigns. PvE multiplayer firefight was also eventually added.

Basically it's a story-based game series with an ever-expanding multiplayer added.

So you would recommend the story then? Is there a chronological order?

It's a compelling science-fiction narrative, with some plot-relevant horror at times. The games have an order which will appear in the menu. Halo Reach is a prequel to the first game (Halo CE), but it probably doesn't matter storywise whether you play Halo CE or Reach first, but Halo CE is much better at introducing everything you encounter, rather than just tossing everything at you from the start.

Thanks just bought it!
I would still recommend playing the multiplayer, specifically custom games with the party games since standard matchmaking is full of veteran players who have been playing for years.

Order of release:
Halo: Combat Evolved
Halo 2
Halo 3
Halo 3: ODST
Halo: Reach
Halo 4

Order of story:
Halo: Reach
Halo: Combat Evolved
Halo 2:
Halo 3: ODST (this game's story take place during the early missions of Halo 2)
Halo 3
Halo 4
If you enjoy the campaign I'd also suggest watching Halo: Legends. It's a collection of short stories which goes further into the lore, using a dramatic variety of animation styles.

And yes, Halo absolutely has a good campaign. One of the best of all video games ever. Just don't count halo 4 as canon.
Halo Reach has a wave survival mode which is fun and highly customizable too if you're only doing offline. Custom online games are really fun too though.
Enjoy it.

Edit: Remember to enable the grunt birthday party skull. Makes every headshot a blast

Story is ok but its definitely dated and theres a lot of plot thats straight up not explained or retconned in ways that don't help new players fully understand it.
Remember that you can switch the horrid remastered version they made OFF in settings or just pressing tab (I think that's the shortcut, remap if needed)

Like what? Most of the game is designed, especially the first ones, to be discovering the unknown. Watching lore videos beforehand will worsen the experience.
As far as story goes, you should note that Halo 4 is not considered a part. The original developers (Bungie) last game was Reach, and as others have mentioned here, some of the story has been retconned from Halo 4 onward. I would recommend playing in this order:

Halo CE
Halo 2
Halo 3
Halo ODST
Halo Reach

If after playing the first few games you find yourself enjoying the story I would recommend reading the novels. I recommend:

The Fall of Reach
The Cole Protocol
Ghosts of Onyx

The novel "Fall of Reach" and the game "Halo Reach" deal with the same story. Reading the novel first may enhance your appreciation for the game. Lastly, by the time you get to Halo 3 the story begins to become a little more convoluted. I recommend the blog at ascendantjustice.com. Its very good and if im not mistaken, the author was eventually hired by 343i.
