I only have an ms account nowadays for this game. I ditched windows years ago. So I gotta go reset the password every time I get the urge to replay every year or so cause hell if I remember it. Not that this should even mater, it's the principle
This allows connection to Xbox Live servers which, among other things, allows you to sync your player name in LAN, play with others via the Xbox Live network (both on PC and Console in the case of Halo 3), and sync achievements with Xbox Live. Thats all just for campaign.
In Microsoft’s interest are also them not wanting people to pirate their products. You can consider the Xbox Live requirement a more passive form of digital rights management software, or DRM for short.
Imagine having an optional login for online functionnalities, imagine being able to do LAN in Local whithout rellying on an online account, imagine that steam achievements would be steam achievements standalone like in.. well.. every games on steam ? Microsoft want a growing account number, but thats creating network issues and login frustrations to players who don't care about online stuff.
