MKB is way better than using a gamepad. In some ways they both have their ups and downs but imo MKB will always come out on top with enough practice. Just keep in mind that it may take years but will help you a lot in your life as you start playing all future FPS titles to MKB and it just becomes natural.
Also, one thing I noticed is that on gamepad the Halo 3 pistol is very hard to use since it relies heavily on auto aim to where it's considered almost useless. But on mouse it's a very powerful weapon.
They can be very challenging in a 1v1 BR fight for sure and they are just a few meters in front of you because the really good gamepad players don't tend to miss much with the BR. Their reticle just sticks to your body no matter what you do. ARs can be very challenging too. At longer range though, gamepads will be at a much bigger disadvantage with those weapons.
Well, it always comes down to shoot them first and don't miss ofcourse. But I recommend engaging with gamepad players when you can comfortably hit them and they are unable to land all their shots as much as much as possible for an ideal scenario. I found on Halo 2 Midship with a mouse I can comfortably shoot across the entire map and hit most of my shots with a BR.
