Really the best advice is to just noob combo everything (charged plasma pistol to take down shields and then a headshot). Try to stick to cover and don't run out guns blazing. Halo is about positioning and tactics. If something isn't working, try a different gun or approach from a different angle.
Heroic is the difficulty Halo is meant to be played anyway (except for Halo Infinite, which is built around Normal difficulty), so you should be fine.
General tips:
-Plasma weapons drain enemy shields faster, but don't do as much health damage. Kinetic weapons are the opposite: slightly less effective against shields, but highly effective against health.
-Not all weapons are headshot-capable. And even if they are headshot-capable, you still have to take down the shields of an enemy (if they have any) in order for the headshot to actually be a 1HK with all weapons but the sniper type weapons. Some high ranked enemies might have really strong shields that can withstand sniper shots to the head, but they will still stun the enemy most of the time. As a general rule: if the weapon has a scope reticle, it most probably can headshot an enemy, except for the rocket type of weapons. Halo 2's pistol doesn't have a scope, but it can still headshot unshielded enemies. Hunters on Halo CE ar a 1HK from a magnum pistol shot in the back at any difficulty.
-The Flood can be a PITA at first because they behave differently not only in tactics, but also in the type of damage they can withstand. They are far more resistant even without shields. On Halo CE, the shotgun is your friend against the flood, on Halo 2 and 3, a good combo is using the BR/Covenant Carbine to "headshot" them by shooting at the parasite sprout on their chest, and an energy sword for when things get close and personal, and because they won't drain the energy sword batteries as fast as the Covenant enemies.
-Equip your AI teammates with better weapons as much as you can. They have infinite ammo, so they can really help you when you give them a sniper rifle or a rocket launcher, although a marine with a rocket launcher can also be counterproductive, because they can kill you accidentally (they don't care too much about firing close to you) or even end up killing themselves and other AI teammates by poor firing from behind cover. Give them rockets when you know there are big open areas ahead or when you want them as the passenger on your warthog. A warthog with a gunner and a marine with rockets on the passenger seat is a very powerful combination.
-Don't rush it. Unlike Easy and Normal difficulty, Heroic requires you to stop the "get in guns blazing" type of approach and actually use a more strategic advance of the battlefield (and Legendary even more so). Use cover as much as you can, or retreat if you need to. You'll still have plenty of opportunities to kick ass, and IMO, they feel even more rewarding when you know you pulled off a cool move when the odds were highly against you.
-For Halo 4: Kill the watchers ASAP. The little guys not only will add additional protection to your enemies, they can also return your own grenades to you and even more annoyingly, REVIVE dead Knights if you are too distracted to notice them doing so. Watchers are annoying since they flee at the smallest damage you do to them, so you "ignore them" to focus on the other guys actually shooting at you, only for them to sneakily return and start reviving a Knight you just killed, which are also annoying to fight a lot of the time because of their multiple teleports, so it can make a gun fight last way more than it should be, adding to the frustration.
TLDR Some fights you might have to do over and over and "practice" to get through, some fights might have you going back for a different weapon, others you'll smash on the first try with no problem.
- Shoot off the flood combat form's left arm prevent them to use their melee attack (great tactic use on LASO).
- Don't use the Sniper rifle against the flood, it only deals 5% damage.
- Plasma pistol is your best friend, they're everywhere to find, it can shred their shields quicker than the AR and it can take down a sentinel by charge shot.
- Pocket reloading; press your reload key twice and switch, your weapon reloads in the background.
