General guide would be:
I find using the Battle Rifle is really nice (covenant carbibe works just as well) just try to shoot the head. You can reliably take out Grunts & Jackals in 1 to 2 shots. When versing Elites a good classic combo is using the Plasma Pistol charge shot to take out their shield then switch to the BR and blap em once in the head to make quick work of them.
Brutes I find the Covenant carbide to work REALLY well. 1 or 2 shots at the head to remove the helmet, then 1 more to the forehead to finish them. May not be as reliable against the Honor Guards though, keep in mind.
When fighting the flood, human weapons tend to work best imo. SMGs, BR & Shotgun are all good choices.
Final note, practice with your grenades. They are invaluable when tearing your way through waves of enemy, particularly covenant as they tend to group up. Try to stick one of the more dangerous enemies (an elite for instance) and they regularly all stand there like dumb asses and all blow up.
now let me know how that works out for you LOL
