Cross play between Xbox S and Steam?

I want to play Halo again with my cousin like we use to back in the day couch co-op and I thought the best way will be to use my Steam Deck and for him to borrow a Xbox series S.

So my question is can you cross play co-op the campaign between Steam and a Xbox series S/X now in 2023?

You didn't mention crossplay between Xbox and Steam.
It is technically true that Xbox and "PC" can play together, but only if the PC player owns the Microsoft Store version of the game.
Is the Steam version also crossplay compatible with Xbox consoles?

we found that only halo 3 worked for coop campaign over lan, with steam MCC on PC and MCC on xbox series s. the multiplayer worked over lan for halo combat evolved, that's all I can tell you, but this was about 1 or 2 years ago now

Crossplay Campaign only works for Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST.
