Can't invite friends to join through steam overlay

I needed to host a session to get some co op achievements with a friend, but I couldn't invite him to be with me, and the achievement wouldn't pop for me if he hosted. The only options that appeared were invite to watch and join game.

From what I recall, the invite system via Steam overlay doesn't work well with the MCC.

Instead, you have to be Friends/Follow each other via XBox Live's Social App, and you can invite Friends from within the MCC itself to party up.

I did that. except for some reason, my friend WAS able to invite me to his lobby through the steam overlay. We got "like peanut butter and chocolate" when he invited me, except I didn't get it and had to host my own session to get it, but was only able to invite him through the in game friends list

That's odd, but not unexpected due to how buggy the Steam overlay is. At least you got it to work!
