Xinput on Windows should still at least support the 360 controller.
The 360 controller should work just fine too, I've used it before in the past.
I don't remember if it will auto configure or if you have to specifically go into your settings and configure your controller preferences. I've had mine set for years and haven't had to touch it.
When I feel like playing a racing game I just plug in the controller and good to go just like that and can easily go back to M+K by either moving the mouse or unplugging the controller
Some games might require you to restart with the controller unplugged to revert back to M+K
