Halo CE Checkpoints are broken af.
Got to the part with the warthog on Maw, got killed, got put back on the bridge when the sentinels appear? Pretty sure I should of have a few checkpoints during blowing up the reactor. Can't fix ♥♥♥♥ like but here's some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cringe new victory poses.

And in response to any sweaty e-sport wannabe losers with the "GeT gOoD", yeah because being skilled at the game makes glitchy checkpoints work better.

If I remember right they're triggered by location and can be sequence broken. Which is why you can sometimes get sent considerably further back than you'd like. Truth and reconciliation stands out.

Honestly it a lot worse on LASOs and seems to be a just a theme with Halo now at this point since this occurs in every game from CE to even infinite now, where the checkpoints don't activate. The checkpoints are delayed or even cancelled when your shooting, jumping, or moving too fast.

I was trying for the par time and did whizz through to the warthog bit quite fast, might have been why... Still annoying, but thanks for the answer.

Damn, you'd of thought they'd of fixed that in the anniversary.

A loading point doesn't necessarily mean a checkpoint. Also depending on your actions, if you jump, shoot or melee where checkpoints are intended to happen, you can essentially delay those checkpoints, or even cause the game to skip over the checkpoints. Also I think not being at full shields will also delay checkpoints.

But not getting a single checkpoint between the bridge and to the warthog run? It's either you just coincidentally preformed those actions on every intended checkpoint, or that playthrough is buggy as hell.

There are ways to force a checkpoint, but that would require you knowing exactly where to force it.


edit: okay, as I posted this, I just realized I just repeated what Dark said. Well think of this as another person confirming that fact.

I've noticed there are a bunch of checkpoints also tied to doing arbitrary tasks like entirely finishing waves of enemies until they stop respawning. It looks like it's not just flagged locations but events that will trigger them. Only the events may not trigger each playthrough so they feel random. Plus I can see how if you backtrack or something or place yourself aiming the wrong way, a checkpoint could trigger during a wave completion and completely disorient you.

This is more the issue imo. The OG graphics are dark and samey. It gets pretty easy to get lost, even with the primitive destination markers available when they are. Combined with the back tracking and occasional loss of direction the half-reliable checkpoint system can become a real nuisance.

Halo CE's checkpoint system has always been mediocre. That being said 343i is not going to go into a 21 year old game of tangled code to fix something like that, would be a waste of resources for something that isn't game breaking.

Even in the later games, checkpoints tend to fail. Many times throughout the other games, I play through a section without getting a checkpoint and die during the next fight. Then I do the exact same stuff I did before, but now I do get a checkpoint in between. Reach is where the happens to me the most. I've started calling that issue "Schrödinger's Checkpoint".

Yeah they're more busy with terrible battle passes and going back on promises anyway.

been playing through CE now in the MCC.. I'm only playing on normal, and I keep having to re-play like 5-10 minute long sections over and over sometimes because I keep getting oneshot by a sudden tank/rocket launcher/energy sword man jumping at me/♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ banshee roadkilling me? sometimes I'll go through a really long section, die, then get halfway through that section again and then get a checkpoint? it's so bad .-.
