I'm almost a decade older than you, started being a Halo fan from the very beginning and I also love Reach. Reach's hate (and any other Halo title actually), is mostly based on "change" rather than legit "bad design choices". Reach has a great atmosphere, story and gameplay.
For me though, my top favorite would be Halo 2. Not only because of the amazing single player experience (once again, bashed by some because of the introduction of The Arbiter and him taking up half of the campaign missions), I also still think Halo 2 has the best MP maps (with a lot of them being remakes of Halo CE maps), and most actually ended up being remade, sometimes more than once, in future games either through forge or completely professionally by the devs. From the legendary Lockout to the very underrated Waterworks and Colossus (maps never officially re-introduced in the series), Halo 2 didn't have a map that made me thing "jeez, that map again". I genuinely enjoy every map in Halo 2.
And the "golden days" of playing it online back in the day... even if ranked was messed up by "lag switcher" and straight up hackers after certain skill levels, playing social was always a delight. This was pre-private chats on Xbox, and because it was on console, no mid game text chat existed, so in-game voice communication was pretty common back then since it was the only way to interact with the other people out of just shooting each other.
I only wish Halo 2 had forge and theater mode included. That would make it a dream come true. If 343 can implement "Halo 2 Vista's map creator" tools to work with MCC practically the same way they did for Halo CE, it would be great to see what the community can come up with!
MP is Halo 2 Classic and Halo 3
The other Halo games are all above-average games, Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3: ODST, etc are very good games and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them. The only one I wasn't very fond of was Halo 4, because it just didn't feel right compared to the others. I only got into Halo a few months ago so that's a new players opinion.
