This sounds like a BS excuse for 343 to just put their own spin on things (yet again), no offense.
Less-used isn't a valid reason to replace a weapon, on virtue that the shotgun is already a specialised tool that works great in specific situations, and isn't meant to be a catch-all weapon.
Also Bungie could never get the shotgun right either, the only game where the shotgun worked great was the Halo CE shotgun, the gun could easily pellet enemies and heavily damage them outside its one-shot-kill range, giving it good mid-range firepower, with a massive clip, and instant-kill close range firepower.
Later games thought it was a good idea to completely remove pellets after something like 8-9 metres if I recall, which just led to enemies not being damaged at all shortly outside the kill radius. Cool.
Why they never copied the Halo CE performance is anyone's guess, I know they did increase the shotgun range in Halo 5, but that game plays so vastly different that it was practically a requirement for the range to increase.
There should definitely be a beefy shotgun, just for those couple of satisfying blasts at the least

Quite funny that the bulldog and brute shotgun are already being confused, leading one to wonder why create the new weapon in the first place not to mention taking away the classic.
Halo 1 shotgun is best shotgun both in looks and distance. However I still greatly enjoyed every shotgun except for Reach and h4. Can't really put a finger on why but it might be because it looked kinda clunky unlike halo 2 shotty which is a bare bones razor sharp deadly weapon that is fun to use. Would like to see the CE shotgun again though. The promethean thing seemed to do the job and rapid enough for 343 but would rather not see those stupid bullet sponges again.
