So to understand the story
Should I play the titles in the order they are sold / released? ie Reach first?

I've been debating on this, hence I'd like to hear some opinions.

I could care less about the technological advancement between the titles, but would like to appreciate the story in the way that makes the most amount of sense. Sounds like I should play them in the order the were released.

i.e. Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo 3, ODST, Reach, and Halo 4

You can play on release order (Halo: CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo 4) or on chronological order (Halo: Reach, Halo: CE, Halo 2, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 3, Halo 4) and the story will make sense to you either way.

However, I really advise you to play on release order because you will experience first hand how the series gameplay evolved throughout the years.

in order they are released bruv
Might be good idea but for Halo 4 and Halo 5 (not pc) no need to know a lore since they are totally disconnection of main canon also halo 3:odst no needto know anything of story before,

I think HAlo reach is also bit off story besides Beginning of Cortana story and Cameo of captain Keys in Halo: CE. Hard to say switch order setting is best :steamsad: Halo 1,2,3 and something something?

Personally I prefer chronological Reach, CE, 2 ODST, 3, 4 and 5

Reach does a good job setting up the events of CE in my book, it relays the events literally up to the opening of CE.

I like ODST before 3 because ODST takes place at the same time as 2, with the opening being an event that happens early on in Halo 2. Of all of the Bungie games it's the one that is mostly a side story with the Engineers being pivotal to the plot in ODST but barely appearing outside of it

OP for pure story, don't forget the Halo Wars games. They are also side stories mostly (as far as we know, Halo Wars 2 might have an impact on Infinite's plot) and are obviously a major departure in terms of gameplay, but technically fit into the canon as bookends right now. If you want to play them, you should start with Halo Wars 1 before any FPS games and do Halo Wars 2 after Halo 5. So technically my preferred complete order for the whole story so far is HW 1, Reach, CE, 2, ODST, 3, 4, 5, and HW 2

even playing all the games, they still don’t tell the whole story, you would still have to read the books that tell the origins of humans and how the war started, in order to have a better understanding of all the hidden things in the game that have not been explained, for example how humans developed their technologies, how they created spartans ...

Thank you very much guys. I will start with (and replay) CE. This will be an epic journey. And I do own the 2 RTS titles too, will play them as well.

Personally I would play it in story order, but that is just my opinion. As for when 4 and 5 drop as much as people ♥♥♥♥ on them they are CANON and honestly if you haven't played it yet don't allow people to sway your opinion on them.

I like to play it in this order.

Halo Reach
Halo Combat Evolved
Halo 2
Halo 3 ODST
Halo 3
Halo 4
Halo 5

I still don't understand why ANYONE would play ODST before Halo 3. It's not a bad choice... it's just that they don't have strong connections to each other. ODST happens after the Master Chief leaves the city. It takes place in the middle of Halo 2's campaign.

For replaying the series? By all means! Go ahead! But for playing it for the first time release order is what I will always recommend.

As far as the books go they are only leaned on heavily for Halo 4 and Halo 5. Otherwise they are non-essential. I know I really enjoyed the first 7 books published but never bothered to get into the 343i canon. There's also a comic that bridges Halo 2's ending and Halo 3's beginning.

Oh, and heads up: When you start Halo 2 with Anniversary graphics it starts out with a cutscene that happens in between Halo 4 and Halo 5. This cutscene teaser for Halo 5 doesn't happen when you start with classic graphics.

I honestly don't think there is a BAD halo game, just halo games the hardcore fanbase don't care for. They're all excellent games

I've long mantained that if Halo 4 was a generic sci fi shooter with all the same mechanics and graphics and not a Halo game, it would probably have sold less but ended up being considered a cult classic late 360 game that is remembered for pushing the console to its limit.

Halo 5, I don't know. I've always been more of a campaign player, and that campaign was just short and badly designed.

I'd go release order. That'll preserve the narrative presentation as well.

Reach is mentioned in some capacity in nearly every game before it. This setup will make it more impactful knowing how pivotal the outcomes and sacrifices of Reach were to the main story that you'll have already experienced and maybe even taken for granted by the time you actually reach.. Reach.. to see what it took.

I started from Reach and it made more sense. As of the gameplay and visuals for the games following it, everything looks good so I didn't feel the downgrade.
