I've been debating on this, hence I'd like to hear some opinions.
I could care less about the technological advancement between the titles, but would like to appreciate the story in the way that makes the most amount of sense. Sounds like I should play them in the order the were released.
i.e. Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo 3, ODST, Reach, and Halo 4
I think HAlo reach is also bit off story besides Beginning of Cortana story and Cameo of captain Keys in Halo: CE. Hard to say switch order setting is best
You can play on release order (Halo: CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo 4) or on chronological order (Halo: Reach, Halo: CE, Halo 2, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 3, Halo 4) and the story will make sense to you either way.
However, I really advise you to play on release order because you will experience first hand how the series gameplay evolved throughout the years.
Reach does a good job setting up the events of CE in my book, it relays the events literally up to the opening of CE.
I like ODST before 3 because ODST takes place at the same time as 2, with the opening being an event that happens early on in Halo 2. Of all of the Bungie games it's the one that is mostly a side story with the Engineers being pivotal to the plot in ODST but barely appearing outside of it
OP for pure story, don't forget the Halo Wars games. They are also side stories mostly (as far as we know, Halo Wars 2 might have an impact on Infinite's plot) and are obviously a major departure in terms of gameplay, but technically fit into the canon as bookends right now. If you want to play them, you should start with Halo Wars 1 before any FPS games and do Halo Wars 2 after Halo 5. So technically my preferred complete order for the whole story so far is HW 1, Reach, CE, 2, ODST, 3, 4, 5, and HW 2
Halo Reach
Halo Combat Evolved
Halo 2
Halo 3 ODST
Halo 3
Halo 4
Halo 5
For replaying the series? By all means! Go ahead! But for playing it for the first time release order is what I will always recommend.
As far as the books go they are only leaned on heavily for Halo 4 and Halo 5. Otherwise they are non-essential. I know I really enjoyed the first 7 books published but never bothered to get into the 343i canon. There's also a comic that bridges Halo 2's ending and Halo 3's beginning.
Oh, and heads up: When you start Halo 2 with Anniversary graphics it starts out with a cutscene that happens in between Halo 4 and Halo 5. This cutscene teaser for Halo 5 doesn't happen when you start with classic graphics.
I've long mantained that if Halo 4 was a generic sci fi shooter with all the same mechanics and graphics and not a Halo game, it would probably have sold less but ended up being considered a cult classic late 360 game that is remembered for pushing the console to its limit.
Halo 5, I don't know. I've always been more of a campaign player, and that campaign was just short and badly designed.
Reach is mentioned in some capacity in nearly every game before it. This setup will make it more impactful knowing how pivotal the outcomes and sacrifices of Reach were to the main story that you'll have already experienced and maybe even taken for granted by the time you actually reach.. Reach.. to see what it took.
