I say, just stick with it.
Though I would suggest carrying on playing through it - and yeah, level design improves from the second game, especially avoiding too many repeating rooms.
The Halo 1 campaign is better than others, at least in parts. They're all not very good by today's standards.
Just play Reach and call it a day, the others are just more of the same.
Edit: you do miss out on the best vehicle physics in the entire series, though.
Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo CE, ODST, Reach.
It's perfectly fine to skip the game or play it much later. I suggest at least one full playthrough just so you know what goes on. There's nothing wrong with playing it on Normal or even Easy. If you do play it then I STRONGLY recommend playing it on classic graphics, the Anniversary graphics for CE are far worse than the Anniversary graphics for Halo 2.
People talk about getting lost on the Flood levels but I've gotten lost on the fourth level where you drive around the island in a warthog several times.
