Halo 2 co-op campaign - only host gets mission counted as completed
So I tried asking 343 for help with this issue, and that was 3 days ago and the only reply I got was unhelpful as it asked me to do something that I stated I already tried. I've also tried searching for this issue online, but I could hardly find anything related and when I did it was a dead end with no fix. So I'm gonna try to get help here as a last resort.

My friend and I came across a really annoying bug involving the halo 2 co-op campaign. Whenever we complete a mission, whatever that mission may be, only the host gets the completion, and the non-host has the missions as "unplayed" when viewing missions, and the counter for missions completed in the stats menu doesn't go up. Difficulty, skulls, classic or remastered graphics, or who hosts, none of it makes a difference.

We've tried most if not all of the basic fixes for something like this. Reset modems, restarted pc's, restarted the game, uninstalled and reinstalled the game as well as halo 2 individually, verified game files (all were there), unplugged our keyboards, changed graphics settings, played through multiple missions, and we tried changing things I stated in my last paragraph. Even after all of this we have the same issue of only the host getting the completion.

One thing we noticed which is no doubt the cause, is that while the host is loading into the next mission the non-host gets a loading screen for the mission they had just completed. So for example once we complete cairo station I would get the loading screen for outskirts and in my menu it would say I was on outskirts, however my friend would get the loading screen for cairo station with his menu saying he's on cairo station. The mission works fine with no errors, but the bug will persist throughout the campaign.

Normally this wouldn't be too much of an issue, but since we are playing on legendary (and halo 2 is a pain on legendary), we would like something to show that we completed it, and there's no way we are doing it twice. We previously completed both reach and CE both on legendary with little to no issue, so we assume its specifically with halo 2.

Has anybody else encountered this issue and/or know a fix?

Hey guys me and my friend found a solution to this bug. Basically the game is not giving you the achievements because it isn't even registering the non host players as completing the missions. What you have to do as the host for everyone to get the completion and the achievements is just to start the mission manually from the missions tab, then also make sure to select the Score HUD element too in the setup menu. Doing this makes it so that after each mission you go to an after action report and every player gets completion and achievements for the missions

I have the same problem and no solution
same here, i'm just lucky my friend doesn't care about achievements.
Me no, a solution that seems to work: Finish the level alone once before. Indeed, the game seems not to be able to follow the progress of the second player, unless he has already made the levels or is at this specific level in his progress.
Sorry I am French and speak little english
I only encountered this problem on Halo 2 no problem with a coop on Reach or CE

If that works for you then I’m glad, but my friend and I already completed the missions we were trying to do co-op on, and still didn’t get any progress.
Has your friend already finished them on his own? a timer appears when you restart the mission?

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1928248537 maybe this can help, i didn't had mission count problem before but achievements/ time tracking problems, like i beated halo combat evolved and even after i fixed the problem still i have to play all the missions again because only halo 2 trigged all informations of my campaign :/

Yes, we both completed a few missions solo to see if that would work, which it did, but when we did the same missions co-op only the host got credit for completing it co-op. I don't think I ever tried restarting the mission in co-op, probably gonna try that later.

Yeah I saw that guide when I was also having trouble unlocking achievements, which is an issue that sorta fixed itself on it's own. Sadly I don't think the problems are related because besides achievements for completing the mission (which the non-host doesn't get since the game doesn't register the mission as completed for them) any other achievement such as picking up skulls still unlocks normally.

I had the same issue, so annoying seeing as though each of these missions took me and my mate like 1 hour 30m lmao

OP, do you also get the cutscene connection interrupted glitch? Cause my partner and I get this too, and we figured it was somehow related to the fact that the final cutscene in a level either has to be skipped immediately or it does it by itself (and in either case, what happens afterwards is as you describe). I thought they were part of the same issue, but maybe they're separate.

Halo 2 co-op is pretty bug-ridden, and at a point we just decided that the other person would host their way through the game another time so we could both get the progression that way. So far, Halo 3 is working much better. Now if only we could actually choose who plays Chief and who plays Arbiter, instead of the game just ignoring who's hosting and assigning the same roles every time...

Well while looking for a fix ourselves we started to skip the cutscenes to get through the missions quicker, so I couldn't say for certain. The first time we went through the missions though the cutscenes played through just fine, so unless it only happens sometimes then I doubt we experienced it. We did get a "starting up mission" (or something similar, can't remember exactly) screen after the loading screen was finished, but not sure if it's related to the problem given how it happened to both host and non-host.

Good to know halo 3 works better at least, we wanted to play them in order but I personally don't want to wait for 343 to eventually fix these bugs, if they ever do given mcc's history.

yep, experiencing the same with with a friend. when he hosts, he gets credit for the mission, when I host, I get credit. At the end of a mission I will get the load screen for the one we just played if I'm not host, like you mentioned. I think it might've started happening around the time halo 3 dropped, as we didn't have this issue before. I think we're gonna stop playing the halo 2 campaign until this gets fixed

Well still no reply from 343 support, makes me wonder if they even care that a bug like this exists.

Yeah this has been around since the release on Xboner. Progress counted for me when I was host but not for my buddy. Strangely though, it counted some missions as completed but not others. Tested it last week on PC and the issue still exists.
