Text chat not working since launch?

So I've been having the text chat not working since launch, and it's become an increasingly annoying problem since launch for two reasons.

One is that when playing multiplayer with friends through voice chat, they're laughing at the stupid stuff said in chat and I can't see it. When I open the text chat no one ever says anything, even if I kept it open to block my screen all game. No one can see my messages either.

Two is that I host custom games sometimes, and not being able to communicate with the lobby makes it harder to do maps/gametypes people want.

I know others have had the problem. Unfortunately googling and searching the forums hasn't worked out for me.

For the record, voice chat in game doesn't work either, despite changing the settings numerous times.

I was wondering if anyone here would have a solution/idea on how I could fix this. To date, I have:

- Tried re-installing the game
- Verified file integrity
- Changed the relevant ingame settings
- Reinstalled Windows
- Played with Windows microphone settings
- Played with Xbox account settings

idk about voice chat, text chat works just fine, people just don't use it

Check your xbox privacy settings, it could prevent you from seeing chat.

I've seen it pop up here and there, much less than the flights, though.

I don't know how to make it switch channels (e.g. Squad, All), because apparently it can- accidentally triggered it to do so playing Forge some weeks ago. (Still want to know how, if you know- tell me :D)

Also feel like I've attempted to open it and it didn't open, but I was probably pressing the wrong key (as it's J or something).

I tried that a couple weeks ago, sadly didn't change anything. Thanks though.

Text chat works for me, but I would appreciate being able to bind it to something other than only [J].
As for voice chat, I've read some complaints about it not working, but I'm curious, is it genuinely not functioning, even when playing with friends, or is no-one responding? Because if it is the latter, it might be due to people like me who instantly deactivate any form of voice chat in any game that they install because of... past experiences.

That's a good point. I'd say it's a mixture of both, as while nobody responding is a factor, there are still plenty of people who enjoy Halo in any fashion with their mic on and listening to others in open lobbies. Because yeah, my voice chat doesn't work period for hearing others despite my in game voice setting at all, and making sure text chat is set to all, but I've never had friends able to hear me either (through halo)

I've noticed for voice chat, you actually have to have the right device set as the default communications device in windows. Like setting your headset or whatever you use as the Default device for microphone/Headphones isn't enough, you have to actually set it as DEFAULT COMMUNICATION DEVICE.

I have played with friends who have been laughing at how salty some players get, both in text chat and voice chat, and I constantly have to ask them whats going on. While yes there is the symptom of not many people responding, that is emphasised by the fact that the chat has not been working for a lot of people since the launch of the game.

I see plenty of text chat. Voice chat is rarer, but I see a fair bit of that too. I don't know what might be wrong with your text chat, but the options menu has a few different voice chat channels, and you can only choose one (squad, team, all, none). Maybe you can only hear people who have the option set to the one specific voice channel that yours is configured to as well, so the odds of them having a mic, wanting to use it, being in the same channel as you and not being on a different team/squad or whatever might just be super low. I hear people occasionally with it set to All, but it's rare, and I almost never heard people when I had it set to Team.

I had the same issue. Typing in squad chat before typing in all chat at the beginning of each game worked for me

Really? I'll give it a go when I can and report back. Interesting if that's all I need to do though. Glad it works for you at least :)
