thats kinda effed up tho, as people on other regions will get them before the others, spoiling the game

I can see the logic in Novaturien's point: releasing on one time zone effectively tells other regions they matter less than the home region of the release.

On the other hand, corporations have a global reach, but they're still locally staffed, so it does make sense to release during working hours for the providing company.

I personally come down on the side of "the company's timezone makes sense," solely because although digital releases mean they could unlock whenever, there's just too much spoofing/VPN stuff going on to make those release times stick.

Back when midnight launches were for physical media, it made more sense; I started gaming in the mid 80s, and while DARPANet was a thing, public internet really wasn't. Even in the 90s, this "open and rush to spoil immediately" behavior wasn't common, chiefly because we were still relying on BBS and AOL.

Now, if you tried to do midnight in each respective region on a given date, you'd end up handing the keys to the YouTube/Twitch/etc spoiler-mobile to the earliest time zones.

I dunno man, i'm pretty confident ps4 does just that. I recall preordering games digitally and the stuff would unlock right at midnight and I've never had a second thought about it. In regards to spoilers, thats all on you to avoid. Its Halo anyways so who doesn't know the story past a fraction of folk? Plus there's nothing to spoil when its already been a 15 odd years or so. As for releasing during company hours, while anything can go wrong at launch, you should be confident as a developer that it wont. They flighted for a reason and if things will go wrong, they'll go wrong. It's not common that day 1 of a games release its completely unplayable. While the Halo 3 flight was promising, nothing will be fixed for a month or more anyways.

we werent talking about halo in specific, also, what benefit does locking a game for other timezones benefits us all? atleast when its released at a specific time at the same time you can say that you couldve played with everyone, without worrying about spoilers, because theyre inevitable if you are even aware of the algorythms that people use.

There's no real benefit, its just makes sense for a game to launch on its advertised date. Like its always been. You'll always lead folk to be dissapointed if you say your game will launch on X day but then it actually comes out 4am the day after because you're in a different region.

All in all, its not that big of a deal. Its annoying for sure but eh, whatever.

But... the game is launching on it's advertised date and 343 isn't disappointing anyone. It's the people who don't understand that who are disappointing themselves.

Bump so those who don't/won't visit the halo sight can see easily. Shout out to "Der Wolf" and "Creatures" for the info. Also, PST here so I get to play early in the day.
