Halo 4 is an ugly looking game.
I remember being so disappointed with Halo 4 when I first played it on 360 because the graphics/art style looked so amateur compared to Reach and Halo 3.

Rocks and cliffs looked impressive and that section right before you hop in the warthog in the 2nd mission did look quite beautiful but overall I found 343 completely failed with their new "art style". To me, the game looks so cartoony and up until that point, Halo games always had a somewhat realistic vibe (even Halo CE and Halo 2 were going for realism but they were obviously limited withwhat they could do). Along comes Halo 4 and everything just looked so cheap and cartoony.

A lot of people at the time raved about the graphics. I'll admit, the rocks and cliffs did look more detailed than they were in Halo 3 but as soon as you would get up close and look at the textures they just looked low res and crappy. The cracks showed upon closer inspection and I found these more "detailed" textures only looked good in the distance whereas Halo Reach Halo 3 textures looked detailed up close.

Even in multiplayer, all the text/fonts were just atrocious. Weapon redesigns were hideous compared to the originals, Spartan armor looked cartoony, and they even managed to screw up the UNSC logo. Don't ask me why the look of a UNSC logo bothers me because it really shouldn't. But 343 managed to make the "UNSC" logo so damn ugly that everytime I see it I cringe. How 343?.... just..... how?

Halo 5 still had a somewhat similar art style to Halo 4 but overall I didn't find it to be quite as ugly. They also managed to fix a lot of the text/fonts so that they weren't such an eyesore when playing multiplayer.

But yeah, between the lack of proper Marty Odonell music, and hideous graphics I will always look back on Halo 4 as mediocrity. It just left such a bad taste in my mouth. I was all excited for a brand new Halo game as I was a huge fan of Halo 3 in highschool and I was sure Halo 4 would be just as epic as Halo 3 and I thought I was in for more of the same good old Halo. Purchased the game day one and I remember just feeling like why the hell did they change everything?

The game looked, sounded, and felt like some half baked Halo knock off. The game completely lacks polish in these areas and as a Halo fan that was just the complete opposite of what I was used to getting from Bungie Halo game and I was quite surprised that they messed it up.

I'm sorry if you love Halo 4 but for me it is easily the weakest Halo game in the series. You can sense the devs lack of confidence at every turn and you can see the obvious attempts at it being a COD clone and for that reason it will never feel like a true Halo game to me... not in multiplayer or campaign. (Even if the story has it moments)

I didn't like the Halo 5 campaign either. I really enjoy Halo 5 multiplayer because it has all that polish that Halo 4 was lacking and it's got very tight and fine tuned gameplay. The graphics may not be amazing in Halo 5 but the art style was definitely improved somewhat compared to Halo 4. So they somewhat redeemed themselves.

But I seriously can't wait for the Halo Infinite reveal because if they're going back to the original art style/graphics it's just going to obliterate both Halo 4 and 5.

Anyone else think Halo 4 is just a hideous game (even if it has a few moments of beauty here and there)?

You don't find that it has a cartoony look that the previous Halos never had?

To be honest, Halo 4 looks better than Halo 5.

Change My Mind.

I don't find it does.

Things look ok from afar. I will admit certain things looked more detailed in Halo 4 than in Halo 5 but up close everything in Halo 4 just looks atrocious.

Funny how you say Halo 4 Spartans look more cartoony than Halo 5's. I'd argue that Halo 4's Spartan armors actually look like metal than plastic. But, overall, I think it's odd how you find Halo 4's visuals "cartoony". I totally don't feel that way.
I don't know how long it's been since you played Halo 4, but I encourage you to look again. I once shared the sentiment that Halo 4's visuals looked funny, but after playing through it again, I got a whole different view. Yes, textures up-close are still rather horrendous, but not all aspects of the game look hideous. The bridge part in Requiem, the Forerunner structures in Forerunner, the rocky geometry of Reclaimer, and all those locations still have some beauty, regardless of faithfulness to the originals. You just have to look at them again, through your own perspective and not through a video. If you don't have an Xbox, remember to sign up for PC flighting when Halo 4 comes around so you can look at them yourself.

Also... you're not wrong about the devs. Most of them were people who didn't like Halo.

I know what you're talking about. There are parts that do look really cool.

But imo, the visuals lost that realistic look that the original Halo games always went for. You have to admit, there is something completely different about the visual style of 343's Halo games vs Bungies' Halo games.

It goes beyond just design. Sure, weapon models look different, the covenant has new designs etc etc.

But just the basic "style" of their graphics looks completely different. Halo 1-3 and Reach all stuck with a consistent "vibe" in terms of how the games look and it seemed like the were going for a reality based vibe.

Each 343 game aside from the redone textures for the anniversary games have a cartoonish look to them.

H2A (multiplayer only), Halo 4, and Halo 5 all have a somewhat cartoony look to them.

I haven't really paid attention to the quality of the graphics, but I dislike 343i's artistical style and direction they took.

Armor just looks like plastic to me in 4 and 5.

Yeah overall... they really aren't anything special graphically.

I thought Halo 4 was easily the best looking Halo game (and possibly the best looker on the 360), not the best playing mind and their art direction is not as strong, but technically better I'd say.

looks like borderlands, but in a not so good way

You need to get your eyes checked if you think Halo 4 looks like Borderlands.

halo 4 is okay as a game, just not really as a halo game (chief should have remained in his original armor and the undersuit also had no reason to be drasticly changed untill he would have reached infinity where it would be logical for the armor to be changed there)
VerrucktMedic Jul 5, 2020 @ 10:48am
I remember distinctly that the Spartan undersuits, and the Rocket Hog's turret was super low res in Halo 4. I don't know why they stick out to me, just I remember that to this day.
Carnageloser7 Jul 5, 2020 @ 12:15pm
Well yeah they didn't make halo they just threw money at it. Of course they don't know what they're doing lol and they never will.
