Also, word of advice, Legendary is meant to be stupidly hard. As in, it's meant to be an unreasonable grind fest... At least until you figure out all the ins and outs, like Plasma pistol to precision weapon.
And actually, their shields are even more OP than Chief's in Legendary.
Nah, just charge a plasma pistol, make sure it hits and right away pull out the magnum and head shot, Instant death. This is literally the easiest way of killing enemies with a shield ( except in later games you use the precision rifle instead).
At least out of the two that I have done, CE was tremendously fairer and therefore easier than 2. A pattern that I've recognised is that the curve of the difficulty is different in a legendary playthrough.
The nuisance-class enemies (grunts, shield jackals, drones) become a lot more of a threat because they barely take longer to kill you than anything else. So missions which spam hordes of weaker covenant (the first few missions) end up being disproportionately harder than most of the game.
In CE if you can beat Truth and Reconciliation on legendary, you're all set to finish the rest of the game.
Once you meet the flood you're basically on easy street. The flood are exceptionally weak to the shotgun. You can even use the off-spray to potentially kill 3 full health combat form across 2 shots. And any other weapon that you may be carrying while you replenish shotgun shells. Even the otherwise useless AR can kill a couple of combat forms in one magazine.
And also the flood frequently function as decoys for the real threat which is still the covenant. The covenant usually wins in a fight against the flood but they are not helped by their plasma weapons nor the floods powerful melee resistance, which just means more time for you.
With Halo 2 it's more about knowing what's coming before you could logically know that it's going to happen, rather than skill. The famous jackal snipers also scale up very similarly to the other trash enemies that I mentioned, except they are actually taken into consistent one-shot territory. If they graze you in the toenail you're f***ed. So you better die a few times and find out where and when they come out.
Weapon overheating is a concept that just doesn't exist to the enemies. They can fire faster both in rate and projectile speed. Your vehicle health is tied directly to your health which means they suddenly receive the durability of a wet paper bag once you step into them. Combat forms take at least two shotgun shells to kill now, they move faster and they carry a wider range of weapons which makes it harder to replenish ammo for the specific gun you want.
The only saving grace of Halo 2 is that brutes do not require the same resourcefulness to take down compared to elites. Instead of preparing a solution to break energy shields, you just have to pop them in the head a few extra times, and they can't undo your progress by running off. But it doesn't do much to change where the games stand overall.
