It's your choice. While Reach may come first chronologically, it's more complex than CE. Many elements you see in Reach won't be in CE because these were made in vastly different periods.
CE was the launch title of the Xbox, the beginning of Halo, in November 15th 2001. Halo Reach was released in October 2010, after Halo 2, Halo 3 and ODST were made.

As a veteran, I recommend you begin with CE. It's simple to understand and the story is solid. The Anniversary graphics give you these so called "Terminals" which give you a visual diary of one of the characters that you'll encounter in the game.

reach is chronologicaly first...gameplaywise :D and designwise there are 10 year difference
The importance of Reach doesn't make any sense until you've already played CE through 3

It does though. It gives you context as to how CE even happened in the first place. Six alone was responsible for it to happen.

I'd like to be the only person in disagreement and say that you should start with Reach. Having said that, there's not a right or wrong answer here. There are benefits to both.

You should first play halo reach as it is chronologically the first game of the franchise then once you beat halo reach play halo combat evolved.

I would argue that playing through the rest of the games first gives Reach a much greater impact specifically for that reason. Reach was written as a prequel, not as a first story, and a lot of the plot points seem to me to lean on prior investment in the story for their payoff.

Fair enough.

If you want more opinions, in mine the transition from Reach to CE would be very difficult for someone whos never played either.
The 10 year difference just make these games so vastly different.

I'd start with CE, then play reach mainly because 2 isnt out yet.
but also the transition from Reach to Halo 2 is a lot more bearable in my experience.
and you shouldnt have to wait till 3 is released to play a game you own now.

CE is especially jarring when it comes to its weapon selection.
3 useable covenant weapons. Even for its time thats kinda strange.
Experiencing that after reach (which has a massive selection of weapons)
is harsh even for me whos played CE since release.
