What's your problem with signing up for a free account? You are so weirdly hostile towards it.
I just have no need for a Microsoft account. What seems weirdly hostile to me is them requiring me to log in to an account for no apparent reason. It's easier to just refund the game and not play it. If they drop the requirement in the future then I might pick it up again.
You were required to sign up for a Steam account to post here. Why did you do that? You were required to sign up for an account with your internet provider to get internet service. Why did you do that? What's so different about having a Microsoft account? One you likely already have, unless you're on a Mac or something, in which case why did you sign up for an Apple account?
My Steam account provides great value to me, Valve provides a stellar service. My ISP is less than stellar but again I get a lot of value out of my contract with them. Signing up for a Microsoft account and agreeing to let them harvest my data would do nothing for me except let me get past the login screen on Halo.
I have to wonder why they impose such an arbitrary requirement. It would be trivial to just let me get to the main menu and start the game. Why do they insist that I MUST sign up and log in to a Microsoft account even if I'm going to play offline?
This is pure paranoia and nothing more. Every service you use on a daily basis collects your data. EVERY service, and you agree to it. You probably already have a Microsoft account anyway as you're most likely on Windows.
I think the reality here is you were just looking to stir ♥♥♥♥, as otherwise you'd have just refunded the purchase and not replied this much. You want conflict.
I highly doubt you're going to actually leave. If you were going to, you would have by now. You're just an outrage junkie trying to get his fix.
you can buy the 1st game alone and just never touch the account outside of Halo
the account is likely because the game is hosted on microsoft servers and it's the infrastructure they've used for 2 decades
