I don't think it's just that. I haven't gotten much better, if at all better, in the last few years, and I've both played through the original on Xbox and now I'm on Two Betrayals here.
I've pretty much always played on heroic when playing the original, but here I'm playing on legendary. And I found it way easier to get through the Library when I did it on legendary today than the last time I played it through on heroic.
I think it's mouse vs. controller. The fact that I can turn 180 degrees probably 10 times faster with my mouse than with a controller has saved me plenty of times.
I had a very easy time with the library level, simply because I use a ridiculously high mouse sensitivity and was able to whip around, back and forth and annihilate enemies and they never really had a good chance to surround me. On a controller, especially on the OG XBox, part of the difficulty was due to a controller and 30fps.
That said, there's definitely some AI balancing issues here. I, too, found that the Flood would charge right toward my shotty for easy kills.
