Brutes in Reach - Story inconsistent?
Have the prophets always counted on the brutes for their cause? I always thought that brutes were recruited only after the arbiter failed the prophets in Halo 1. Reach of course happens before Halo 1, so why are there brutes deployed everywhere? (I played Reach when it came out in 2010, but never thought about this or made a connection, since it came out last!)

Also, i feel like with Reach releasing first, people who have never played Halo will not be able to appreciate the introduction of the brutes, and the significance of their presence vis a vis the covenant/elites

Ooh, lemme try my hand at this!

The Brutes have been in the Covenant for a long time. It's just that they are selected as the *new* elites after the old/current Elites failed--! Right?

So in the books they weren't introduced until First Strike as being new but after Reach when they made Contact Harvest they were forces that were always there but not used in every conflict.

I am pretty sure the Brutes were part of the Covenant before Halo 1

What happened after the first game is that they replaced the Elites as the Prophets' favored warriors. They were part of the Covenant before, just with lower standing

They were, but not added in the lore until First Strike/Halo 2

So in the books, were brutes deployed on the first Halo ring, or what?

No they were not, the lore is a bit of a mess on some stuff

So simple way of putting it I guess, is that basically some fleets don't have brutes

Or most fleets I guess? Think I read somewhere brutes were very rarely deployed into combat

You'll notice in Reach that the Brutes mainly show up in what seem like X-Com terror missions. These are missions where the targets are often quite weak, and victory is a given. Those sort of missions wouldn't really interest most Elites, so they off loaded them to the Brute while the Elites went for the more "enjoyable" missions like taking enemy strongholds.

So in other words, Reach is such a large scale conflict that even the Covenant's lowest tier of support troop were called up. Halo was a small scale conflict where an elite Elite unit was sent after a fleeing high value target. The main battle of Reach was still ongoing, so most of the Covenant forces were needed there.

When Halo 1 was taking place, Reach had still been in conflict with the covenant?

Also, was Reach actually glassed or w.e? The epilogue scene shows Noble 6s helmet in the dirt where it was last seen, but the surrounding area seemed lush with greenery, and the narrator was mentioning how the Noble team's mission secured humanity a chance for survival. What exactly happened to Reach?

And was that epilogue scene a scene from the future, immediately after the events of Halo 3?
