Linux support and status
NOTE: If your only purpose in this thread is to say "LOL play Microsoft's Game on Microsoft's Platform" then you're not welcome here. Bungie started off making games exclusively for the Mac, so going to a different platform is not exactly far fetched, and Microsoft has stated multiple times their commitment to Linux in the last few years. This is a place to contribute ideas of value, and some of us have very good reasons to not like the way Windows has gone the last few releases - this is not the place to discuss the merits or pitfalls of Windows. Abusive behaviour will be reported. This thread is for discussion of Linux support, workarounds, and to see if we can find ways to maybe fix the last few issues (hopefully with the developers help)

So, it would be fantastic to have this game running on Linux properly.

Current status:
It works offline if you use a custom version of Proton/WINE to support the Xbox Live login checks. You can only play Singleplayer and Custom modes, as coop is bugged and causes desyncs.

See here for info on how to get the single player working under Proton[www.gamingonlinux.com].

Xbox Live Signin error can be fixed using this version of Proton:
https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/4.21-GE-1-MCC-2

Currently the big issues are:
1. Xbox Live Accounts - no way to sign in on Linux. This could be potentially solved if MS were to make a Linux client for handling Xbox Live accounts, or if the game itself was able to handle the login rather than delegating to the system. There are actually potential benefits to doing this as it means more users will have access to things like Xbox Game Pass.
2. Lack of EasyAntiCheat. EAC technically still has Linux support, so it may or may not be a matter of getting it to work. Hopefully people more useful with Linux can figure this out, and maybe the devs could help.
3. Coop games desync, even without EAC. "Generic coop error" when playing with people on Windows. Other p2p modes like Custom Game seem to work okay.

343, we would appreciate a Linux port, even if it's just a WINE wrapped version of the game with working EAC and Xbox Live Sign-ins!

1. Xbox Sign in works in Proton (Linux)!
2. EAC will someday work under Proton in Linux

Since when? Last I checked, we can only bypass it, not actually sign in to it. That's not a solution

I doubt it. EAC requires kernel mode access, and WINE runs in userspace, and will always run in userspace for security reasons. EAC will never work under WINE or Proton for this reason. It's the same for all intrusive anti-cheat that does things like read system memory.

get this version https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/4.21-GE-1-MCC-2

on the next valve official Proton 4.11 it will be fixed

you can always look at ProtonDB to check if a game works or not :)

Why would you use linux for gaming?

Dual boot windows and linux, or use vmware with windows.
I repeat my self from github discussion
5% of 2mil Halo MCC steam owners is 100k players, means 100k players play Halo from Linux (include my self, I launch this Halo MCC and Reach from Linux)

I agree with it, EAC can not work in linux, because no one will install "custom patched kernel with integrated spyware", literally no one

and Wine make easy to cheat "out of box" we can remove fog, any not needed animations and make direct AIM using just command line(litle bash) and wine startup options...

it nice that Halo MCC have no EAC launch option

Because Windows is spyware
So I heard custom game mode works with Linux as long as EAC is disabled.. So can I invite random Reach players who play on Windows to join my custom game?

read https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/2907

I did not test my self custom multiplayer

from what I read-multiplayer is unstable, Windows players may be kicked randomly, they currently look into this problem, but for some people multiplayer Lin-Win work...so you may try

Even if it does work im not sure I want to purchase it, but im on the fence.. I wont full blown match-making to work : ( Someone should just make a custom kernel for EAC and make it secure; sandbox EAC so it doesn't touch anything it's not supposed to.
EAC need ful system control, and EAC send everything you do on system at momment when play game, and on EAC server your statistic compared to "what you can do" and result is ban or continue play
so EAC will send all you keybord pressing, example you type some login/password on background to other application, while game launched-EAC will send this data to EAC remote server
...(full system data include list of laucnhed application, with list of opened tabs in browser...etc)

^thats what EAC, when developer too lazy to make "real own anticheat system for their servers" they integrate EAC and spy on player

Wow I didnt know it did all that, that's bad.. But wait are there custom patched kernels that are compatible with EAC? Cause I would actually install it lol, I would just not do anything else on that partition (or VM) other than Halo..
