Audio Quality Set to 0 By Default: Step-by-Step guide
1) Navigate to:
C:\Users\<YOUR USERNAME HERE>\AppData\LocalLow\MCC\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor
2) Find "GameUserSettings.ini"
2b) *Optional* - Make a backup copy of "GameUserSettings.ini" and place it somewhere safe.
3) Open "GameUserSettings.in" in "Notepad" or your favorite text editor.
4) Search for "AudioQualityLevel=" (This should be near the bottom)
5) Change the"0" after the "=" to a "1"
6) Search for "LastConfirmedAudioQualityLevel="
7) Change the "0" after the "=" to a "1"
8) Save the changes
9) Close the file
10) Enjoy the game
10b) *Optional* Laugh at the simplicity of this small oversight

Hope this helps :D

But it still doesn't sound like an AAA game from that era should sound, IMHO. I could hear the com communication better, but the weapon adn battle sounds still seem muffeld.

Let's hope they improve sound further. But for now that workaround is OK.

Does this actually affect anything in game? or just in the menus/ui?

AFAIK that file only touches the unreal engine portion of the game. would be good to find out if it actually works during gameplay. I can't test it myself because i don't seem to have the same issue people are reporting.

Good question!

In that file you'll quickly notice all your in-game settings from volume levels to keybindings, sometimes copied for each game.

Yes, this affects the game.

Agreed, there are still NUMEROUS issues with the audio from the mix of the different sources being completely wonky, to the environmental effects not being appropriately applied in all maps to codec/compression issues and terrible use of surround sound setups (center channel use specifically is a mess). Not to mention the bugs with crackling/popping many are experiencing which, at least anecdotally, seem to be related to sample rate/bit depth settings varying across different people's setups.
However this does seem to positively affect at least some of the poor quality issues that were there on top of these others.

Hope this helps!

This does not work if you have the "scratchy" audio issue.

So does this help with the bad sound balancing issues, because that's the main issue I'm having. Most things sound pretty muffled and low, especially guns. Talking and music sound pretty muffled and low at times too

If it works like the GameUserSettings.ini file for Gears 5 (published by Microsoft too and using UE4 too), it could also enable spatial audio in-game.

In Gears 5, turning it down from 3 to 0 turned Atmos into 7.1 output, maybe the same logic applies here.

Hmm, not convinced that this isn't a placebo effect, because I went to check my other dozen or so UE4 games GameUserSettings.ini file, and all of them had the AudioQualityLevel set to zero, pretty sure that's just standard default UE4 behaviour and it doesn't influence the actual quality, because I've never seen anyone else complain about those games audio, and they sound great on my end.
UE4 only handles the Menu/UI aspects of this game, I suspect any true fixes have to come from tinkering with the Halo Engine itself.

didnt really change anything for me still muffled
Paul Dec 8, 2019 @ 1:14am
This does absolutely nothing. This won't fix unbalanced/muffled sound, nor will it fix the crackle.
