the text string '2117' appears a bunch in the security breech terminals in marathon. it's also all the same digits of 7/11 which is where halo 4's mobile game was set.
clovis is the character from the destiny franchise who invented robot-people.
essentially, there's a series of 'magic' artifacts (more like stalker zone artifacts than magic though) that the powers-that-be collect to resurrect great soldiers from history. master chief is a reclaimer of a lineage of great soldier reincarnations, which is why a lot of his themes are named stuff like 'leonidas returns'.
in halo 1, he was nicknamed 'flawless cowboy' in some marketing material if i remember right. in the tie-in halo novels and tv show he's from eridanus 2, which is possibly in reference to the greek river near athens and/or the po river in italy.
you can think of what the UNSC and ONI did to create the spartan-iis and iiis as a bit like a combination of universal soldier and timecop. they raided outer colonies for 'special' (ie, historically heroic) genetic patterns, and replaced them with fraudulent copies that withered away; it's analogous to abducting leonidas out of actual history to help you fight a modern day war. or jabroni gomer necro-ing this thread 5 years later for no discernible reason.
