Screen tearing on Reach?
Hey all!

I'm not really a halo player. I played CE and 2 on pc, and tried them out on console a few times, but I never really invested in the multiplayer, save for a few hours on CE custom servers.

Keeping that in mind, I always experienced screen tearing on the limited experience I had with Reach on xbox, and I noticed the issue was still present in the PC version.

I decided that I'd turn on V-sync and cap frame rate at 60, and it SEEMED to fix it until my first death, where the issue of screen tearing returned. It's not a massive issue, but it's still a visual issue I've always experienced with Reach.

Is this just a simple engine limitation? A bug on the first level of Reach that's always been there? Something to do with the rain effects? I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this both on pc and xbox with vsync and not.

I think it really might be a bug, I dont really have this issue anywhere else but some campaign missions.

You should not have screen tearing with vsync on. Reach didn't have screen tearing on Xbox 360 either, not that I remember. Anyhow, maybe check your Nvidia control panel and enable it from there for the game.

I'm trying my BEST to post evidence but...
A: It looks slightly different from most screen tearing I've seen online. Most pictures I could find show a single slice between frames, whereas this is a section. This was the exact same issue I had on xbox for campaign.

B: I've tried to take a screenshot of it for evidence, but none of my screenshots show up the issue.

I'm thinking it's entirely related to motion blur, since I saw some threads from 10 years ago on the same problem, noting that the game had, "Terrible motion blur and screen tearing". Apparently it's to remove jaggies and it's a technique Bungie used, so I'm thinking it's an artifact from the original release just for the campaign.

I've tried on multiple different graphical settings and it remains, but I've yet to try other gamemodes or levels. I'll post an update if it remains in multiplayer (A gamemode I never played on xbox).

Well, there is no motion blur as 343 already removed it. Maybe you are not playing in Fullscreen option. Windowed and Borderless options can make games stutter for some.

Have you updated your drivers? Is Windows Aero or Transparency on / off? Are you set to fullscreen, borderless, or windowed mode? Is your resolution consistent and your refresh rate the same as your monitors Hz? Have you messed around with V-Sync or G-Sync or Freesync or whatever stuff your monitor might support? If you're using an Nvidia card, have you tried messing with Nvidia Control Panel to modify / lock the various V-Sync settings to adaptive / fast / half refresh rate etc?

Try all of those, and see if it fixes. It COULD be an early release bug specifically for your unique set up, or it could be some weird stuff going on with your settings. I had terrible screen tearing and then I noticed my Geforce Experience wasn't running, so I never got notified there was a new driver, updating those immediately fixed the tearing.

I hope it's as simple a fix for you as it was for me, at least.

I'm playing fullscreen. Drivers are fully updated.

This isn't an issue with my computer, I can assure you. This EXACT issue happened on xbox, identically.
