How do we really earn the trading cards?

I wanted to know how to actually earn the trading cards.
A lot of people have been saying that I must just play the game. I've gotten about 88 hours in and I've only gotten Halo 3 and Halo 4 card, but i've never played those on my account.

Is there an actual way to get those cards, or do we randomly get it?

totally random, things you do in the game don't affect whether or not you get trading cards on Steam

The only way to earn trading card is to be lucky enough to get a booster pack when steam feel like it. And for that you have to be connected on steam almost 24/7.

Otherwise you have to buy them in the marketplace.

you only get like three per game and you either trade or buy the rest

Just leave the game on and you'll get them, could be every 30 minutes. If someone maxes their badge level on any game you own you (and everyone else) has a random chance of getting a free booster pack, again it's a chance.

So far people are only giving half the correct information or are just flat wrong. Here is a complete summery:

• The max amount of cards you will receive with gametime is half the max amount of cards available for said game. For the MCC, that will be 3.
  
  
• You can also receive a booster pack of MCC from sheer luck, depending on what other games you have bought, and your total Steam level.
  
  
• You can also buy booster packs, which give you 3 random cards with the chance of foil(s) with Gems (the in-client currency), or you buy them from the market with real money.

additinaly you can trade them with other steam members, just be sure you make sure your not getting scammed
