Online for Linux users with Proton
I'd like to see some support brought over to allow Linux users to be able to play online, despite the fact that the game does use EAC and it doesn't quite work with Proton, there is official binary builds for Linux that works natively, so I don't see why couldn't just do that to verify the files that will just run under Proton.

The game isn't fully ported to Windows yet... everything has a time and a place.

The last Halo that came to PC was Halo 2 in May 2008. There was not a legit multiplayer scene for Halo on Windows until Halo MCC was ported to Steam back a month ago.

Windows consumer never had Halo on this scale before. It isn't even fully launched yet.

Hopefully they do but that is an utopia to think Linux support is gonna happen before all the Halo are available.

I will not repeat what has been said here. Reach is already working on GNU/Linux and there would be just a couple of ways of making completely working on it.
Long story short, EAC is the main and could be the only issue if Microsoft and 343 Industries were not willing to do any extra work. It would be just providing (at least) Valve and Codeweavers with documentation on how to make Proton/Wine compliant with the EAC.

Edit: You can play on Linux, just not completely. Also why I still have a Windows PC and haven't fully moved to Linux yet.
You can play online on the moddable client, but then achievements and progression are disabled.Would be nice if anti cheats stopped accusing me of cheating when I just want to use an OS that doesn't spy on me...

I use Arch btw.

Custom games work? I have a friend who is going to play Halo 3 on Linux and I'd love to be able to make a custom game so he can join the rest of our friends on windows. :MCCHELMET:

The only thing that launching with no Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) does is block you from playing matchmaking and earning achievements. It might also block you from doing challenges to earn XP, but that's unreleased so I have no clue.

On Windows you can join custom games and pretty much do everything except matchmaking with EAC off. If you have problems beyond that it's probably related to Linux emulating Windows... but this collection is known to be buggy so who knows.
You can play online customs and co-op, just no matchmaking since EAC doesn't work on Linux. Microsoft can't do anything about it, Epic Games needs to put in the work for it but since they dropped support for Rocket League on Linux, they probably don't think it's worth the investment.

Thanks guys it's really good to know that we can play with friends who are running linux. Would be great to have matchmaking but customs and co-op are better than nothing! Looking forward to the release of H3

If cross-play ever happens it would be awesome to have someone on Linux, Windows, and Xbox One all in the same match.
Only option is to dual boot. If you hate Win10, the game works fine on Win7
EAC would probably already work since Valve was talking with them.....before Epic bought them
