I've played tons of Halo on console and there is no reason that this game needs to cater to couch gamers on PC. I hope 343 will learn that lesson before they launch Halo Infinite at the end of next year. I'm not plugging in a controller to play an FPS on PC.
Games like Insurgency Sandstorm, Squad, Rising Storm all have a healthy player base with between 1-5k concurrent players.
I can only speak for myself on this but I don't have problems finding games. I accidentally find games that I don't want to play if I forget to cancel matchmaking after a game ends and I get up to take a piss. This game isn't dead, that's a ridiculous statement.
We're missing a lot of the original Reach features too. Credit system was much better (buy what you want, don't be forced into a specific path), pre-game lobby player inspection (see what armor pieces people were using just by highlighting their name), veto system, and so on.
It's fun but lacks a lot of what made the 360 version great.
With the exception of Halo 5: Reach and Halo 4 are both the 'mediocre' Halo titles. They both have really good moments, but most of it is a little tedious at times. Reach feels like arena-to-arena fights, within the campaign. Only strengthened that you visit the multiplayer maps a few times too many. Halo 4's endgame was mostly filled with Prometheans, who weren't the best enemy addition to the game. The first level was pretty awesome though.
With each release the popularity will spike again until we reach the last release. Then it will show a similar pattern as it does now. Don't forget Halo is awesome, but there are a lot of - arguably - better titles out there today. I play it for nostalgia mostly. Which is why I stopped playing. Reach is one of my least favorite titles.
Edit:
For me I work 9 hour shifts, then I have a son, a wife, errands, and a plethora of other things to deal with. At this point, as much as I hate pay to unlock anything, I'd be willing to pay to get the items I want over this ♥♥♥♥ show.
