1. Open the Start Menu.
2. Click Settings.
3. Click Privacy.
4. Click Microphone.
5. Toggle Let apps use my microphone to Off
Just need to open the game to see it. Might need to close and reopen for it to take affect.
Everything was muted once reaching the main menu, including the rest of the computer (no other tabs could output sound to my headphones)
I have Bluetooth Headphones (preferred sound output) with microphone (bad quality) and a separate wired USB microphone (preferred microphone) due to better sound quality.
This fix worked for me:
- Start the game and make sure you don't have sound
- Right click Sound Icon near clock on bottom right
- In the Sound Settings, click on "Sound Control Panel"
- In Playback Tab, ensure that your headphones is set as "Default Communication Device" and "Default Device" by right clicking on your headphones
It seems having them different mutes the sound entirely with my brief tests
Not sure if it helps but I also ensured the same was done in the "Recording Tab" for my microphone (Default Device and Default Communication Device)
You should be able to do this with the game open and get it immediately without restarting the game (at least for me)
Hope this helps anyone in the future!
We both use Realtek HD audio manager but have our speakers connected to our systems in different ways:
My system uses a USB MIDI device to combine my studio mic and speakers
My partner has her speakers use the line in cable into her mother board
We both use the same speakers which consist of a left, right and base
So the key difference was that in her Realtek HD audio manager I had set the speakers to be 5.1 surround sound where as mine didn't get that option at all.
To resolve her issue I changed the Realtek HD audio manager setting from 5.1 to Stereo which then allowed the game voice audio and other sounds to play at the correct volum level.
A technical expliation for this as a programmer and audio guy is that the game was written originally to only be played with stereo sound. I was able to work this out by turning away from characters that where speaking to the player so my back was facing them then the sound got a bit higher in volume which is a key indicater that 5.1 sound is not correctly implmented.
I have also noticed online and in this thread suggestions that head sets help this is expected as some headset come with fake or acutal 5.1 and even higher surround sound bilt in.
I hope this helps anyone still having the issue
I got no sound ingame when playing co-op, only in menu.
Hopefully that helps someone with a similar issue.
Indeed, this was really helpful. I played around with the bitrate and frequencies.

I found this to not always work, another work around is to STOP the bluetooth audio gateway service. This service handles the handsfree part of your headset, which you do not want running, as it is the thing stopping audio playing in this case. You can stop this service while in game and you should have sound.
I searched and tried a lot, here's records of methods other people might worked, In case some unlucky guys don't get fix by the answers above:
1. This RESLOVED MY PROBLEM: Download DLC named: "MCC - Reach: Extended Language Pack". This DLC is NOT download defautly, and maybe deselected after launch game( dont know why). If you a playing other game in acc, you can try other language pack too.
2. disable other unused sound and recording device, especially "*hands*free*","*AG*", and bluetooth related ones.
3. try lower format settings of audio device in both legacy and modern control panel, like "24bit, 48000Hz"
4. try launch game without EAC, the one allow mods
5. try manually set audio output device and volume in windows' volume mixer. And in game settings, too
6. try change "Multi-player game audio" to "anniversary"
This is a solution that worked for me on Windows 11, I do not know if it is possible on Windows 10, it has been too long.
- Go into your Sound settings,
- Select the sound source you are using, bringing you to the Properties menu
- Change your sound Format "2 channels, 16 bit..."
The problem should be fixed, it shouldn't matter which one it ends up staying on.
This works as a fix although for me it fixed on its own by closing and opening the game several times until the audio worked right from the splash screen
