Playable on Linux with Proton?
Probably not if they insist on using EAC anti-cheat.

So far the game launches fine but has issues with the Xbox login. Some people are working on troubleshooting the issue. With a bit of luck Valve pushes a patch for it to get it running.
launches fine but has a few bugs compared to native windows, either valve or microsoft would push an update out to allow it, plus im pretty sure they are using xbox live so theres no real anti cheat

The game uses Easy Anti Cheat which doesn't work with Proton.
Why not make a partition or use a drive to boot on a windows install, only play games?

Because Windows is horrible proprietary garbage. Pretty much all games run on Linux anyway. It's only the ones with intrusive anti cheat and DRM which have issues.
Oh well, best of luck running it on Linux then.
I do wonder what workarounds and fixes will be used to get this working with Proton in the future.
You seriously asking if Halo is going to run on Linux? Nvidia drivers barely run on it.

Sorry? Elaborate please.

Seems like someone has no idea what they're talking about.

I'm sure someone will get this working on Linux one way or another.
In 2022 (and beyond) the answer is; "Absolutely yes, Halo: MCC runs fine in Proton, with one notable exception. Multiplayer is still not 100% functional. I've been able to play with friends in cooperative mode, in EAC disabled mode but multiplayer matchmaking and other similar multiplayer functionality is still broken due to Proton's Linux-friendly EAC feature not being enabled for Halo: MCC yet. Only the publisher/developer can approve and implement that (exceedingly simple) action, but it ain't yet happened, and may not ever. Only time will tell… Do play the campaigns in single-player or co-op mode though. They're still fun as hell."
It's no longer an issue for 343 to enable eac support (check one box, download file, add file to game folder) but if they will do that is another story. They claim they would like to support the steam deck, but im sure Mircosoft has other plans.

I'd agree and say this is probably a case of 343 Industries want to support it, but the management at Xbox Game Studios are pushing not to because Microsoft want Windows sales and users, as many people as they can possibly get on their platform so they can push services like Gamepass

To be fair EAC wouldn't affect gamepass as that GP doesn't work on linux at all, however despite Xbox's shft to not really caring too much about the platform, linux is probably just one step too far for the MS execs. They only wanna support linux in a way that benifits the subsystem for Windows and nothing more.

So I've just reinstalled this on my machine (arch linux, nvidia 1080, 16GB RAM, i7 7700K cpu), hardly the latest tech but I don't think it should hold things back on MCC, and halo 3 has had some stuttering. I had had similar stuttering with halo2 but I wonder if it's related to the shaders preloading not being optimised? Something that was eventually fixed for halo2. Or maybe it's just a first time running the game issue, or something else. I've uncapped FPS from 60 to be 120, so maybe that will also fix it? Time will tell.
