The good news is NRS made it less of a grind to get everything. The bad news is the grind is still ridiculous because before it was beyond insane to the point NRS should go out of business and Ed Boon should be held criminally accountable, and you just think I'm being hyperbolic. It was bad. It was stupidly bad at launch.
Edit for clarity: I'm referring to equipment unlocked via Towers of Time and the Krypt, which is pretty much all the equipment.
Also, there's some popular equipment you might never get because they were tieed to Krypt events which I'm not sure they're running anymore (or if they put in an alternate means of getting them. ) Liu Kang's MK2 outfit and Jax's MK3 arms, for example.
I've been away for a bit, so someone can correct me if it's been patched since then.
You actually might be in luck with MK2 skins. Mk2 skins are bundles in the shop which you pay for in Time Crystals. You can rack up a LOT of Time Crystals playing for the first time. It might just be awhile before they show up because only 2 character bundles are available at a time and they cycle through bundles every couple days. Play through Story Mode, Krypt, Training, Towers and you should have plenty Time Crystals. There's like 3 sets of MK2 skins per lady (slightly different colors.)
MK3 skins for Kitana, Jade, and Skarlet I believe were Aftermath pre-orders or DLC, so you have to pay for them. Mileena's MK3 outfits show up in the shop for some colors and also Race Against Time for the other colors. Race Against Time = Towers of Time. Each week, the top 5%, 10%, etc earn special rewards for playing. Just make sure you play Towers that yield points. It's really not that hard to come in the top 5%. Mileenas MK3 stuff at KP2 release was hard to get because so many people were trying to get her skins, but I imagined that's died down by now. The biggest thing is going to be waiting for that specific set of rewards to show up.
I've never used a mod, however, TheThiny is a pretty prominent name in the MK community. If you look up videos on any substantive rumor about MK11, you'll hear that name come up a lot. He would look at the game's code with each patch and find placeholders for things to be implemented in a future patch and predict up coming DLC. So if I were to take a chance with a mod, that would be the one.
- There's a character Tutorial for everyone that gives a skin. Easy enough and reasonable.
- Each character has a series of "Character Towers" that takes several hours to complete mainly because A.) You have to "buy" them with in game coins. B.) You have to unlock the individual towers by paying more currency or performing X number of Fatalities or Krushing Blows or Fatal Blows (etc). C.) Completing the towers and, sometimes, the BS modifiers that can get as ridiculous as randomizing your controls, fighting in total darkness, or mines in the playfield that can basically juggle you to death. D.) Spending more currency to unlock the next Tier of Character Towers that have their own unlock requirements and their own BS modifiers. There's 5 tiers per character, and I think 5 Towers per tier. Technically there's a 6th Tier, but that's Augments only and frankly, I don't care about Augments. Skins and Gear are Tiers 1-5. Again, completing all the towers on all the tiers takes a several hours. I went through every character's towers, and it would take me a couple days to a week depending on how much time I spent playing per day.
- The Krypt. It's semi-randomized now. "Special" chests are set in stone and there's at least one per character that you can reliably google. Those special chests aside, the vast majority of the Krypt's contents however, their locations are randomized. So, if you play Scorpion, there's no way to go through the Krypt and get Scorpion's stuff first. Most of the outfits, however, are tied to the Shrine inside the Krypt. Basically pay up 100k coins, and you get a random skin for a random character until the Shrine runs out. Also occasionally Kronika Spheres show up at certain times in one of a dozen possible predetermined locations. Also there's limited-time Krypt Events (gold spheres), which is what most of the most-desired skins / gear are tied to (Kitana's Story mode outfit, for example, is a Krypt Event reward). Also Shang Tsung's throne room requires you performing Fatalities X number of times on each of the characters in the base game. When I played it, it was some ridiculous number like 50 (so 50 Fatalities X 25 Characters.) That's since been reduced, but how low it is now, I don't know.
- Towers of Time. There's several platforms of Towers. Some last a few hours, some last several days. And there's a set number that cycle through. Most of the platforms are themed around a character and have skins / gear rewards for that character. Plus boss towers will award you with random skins / gear for the character you use. There's a "Gauntlet" tower that's always there with set rewards; however, mine is glitched and there's a Rayden skin that never unlocked even though I beat the Gauntlet and NRS can't even seem to fix it. Typically, I would play Towers of Time to rack up Fatalities, Brutalities, Krushing Blows, or whatever to unlock Character Towers, all the while acquiring skins/gear from the various Towers.
- AI Battles. I dunno if this is still relevant or if anyone still plays this, but at launch there were certains skins / gear tied to the AI battle mode and could only be acquired that way.
- Shop. Bundles show up in the in-game shop, purchased with in-game currency that you can earn by playing the game or paying real money for.
-Kombat League. Online matches. Score well enough, and you get awarded with certain gear.
The big issue with unlocks is just the randomness factor. It's been mitigated significantly in subsequent patches because at launch this game ate, breathed, slept, and worshipped RNG. Now it "just" worships RNG. But even now, if you want something specific in the Krypt, you're SOL. Roll the dice and hope to be lucky, but chances are you end up with 7,000 pieces of gear for the 22 characters you don't care about ... and get the 600 pieces of gear you don't care about for one the character you do care about.
The grind in this game, especially at launch when ToT were 1000x harder and basically all you had was the Krypt and a big question mark, is way, way, way beyond reasonable. It's been toned down a TON, but the grind is still pretty insane. However, like I said, the women's MK2 & UMK3 gear, doesn't have near the hastle ... but you're still going to be at the mercy of RNG, waiting for the MK2 stuff to cycle back into the shop and for Mileena's UMK3 stuff to come back into Race Against Time.
Another thing to point out is in a lot of ways, some of the main ways of unlocking stuff -- Character Towers and Towers of Time -- really isn't "playing" the game. What I mean by that is ... there's so many stupid modifiers that it feels like you're playing something else entirely, dodging missiles, not being able to use special moves because your own special moves literally kill you, having to stand under a blood shower or losing your health, being tracked by an obnoxious satellite laser that freezes you in place and lets the AI wreck your health while the laser itself destroys your health, getting blasted by a laser from off screen that stays on screen for basically forever, yet more obnoxious tracking lasers on wheels that go back and forth turning on randomly and sometimes stretching across the entire stage. And, like I said, the rewards are for the most part randomized, so you can't say, "Okay, I'll put up with BS for these three Sub-Zero skins." Nope. More than likely, your only options are to put up with the BS until the game decides to give you the skins you want for Sub-Zero ... because the non-randomized ones generally suck.
I have a love / hate relationship with this game. I really do like it, but the unlocking makes me want to boycott NRS for eternity, the grind is so bad.
