Has anyone realised that 4k cinematic pack doesn't work at all?
Am I missing an in game option to turn it on? I looked everyone.

Here is the thing, like many, I downloaded the pack when it came out, ran the game to check and it looked the same.. then I assumed was just some poor upscaled from he 1080p renderes with unnoticeable difference.

I decided to take a closer look today and realise that's because the 4k videos aren't playing at all.. we are still playing the 1080p videos even if we downloaded the 4k pack.

If you dig into the game folders, you will see that you have Movies and Movies_4k, which is pretty dumb as the 4k pack should have replaced the original videos, not keep them both.

More importantly you can play these video files directly in any video player and the letterbox will display all sorts of information such as version, date it was encoded, duration etc.. these information is hidden when playing in game, however, if you try to use Ansel during those cutscenes, it will reveal this information and show that you are actually still running the old 1080p videos and not the 4k ones.

So to avoid conflict I decided to move the Movies folder to see if that was going to force the game to read the Movies_4k folder. Nope.. it crashes when you go into story mode. So I renamed the Movies_4k folder to Movies.. now the game finds the folder, but display black in the chapters thumbnails and skip the videos altogether and jump straight into the fights.

In short... we have those video files here and they just don't play in the game. I guess you can watch it if you double click on them and turns out they are in 4k and look great but how the hell don't they play in the game?

Scratch that. Found the ultimate solution.

So if you read the post above, you know you need both folders Movies and Movies_4k and copied and replaced all files from Movies_4k into Movies folder. Which is redundant and stupid. But if you delete either of these folders, the story cutscenes won't work at all.

Here is the solution. Go into your Steam library, Right click on the game > properties > DLC and disable 4k Cinematic Pack.

Now the game thinks you don't have the 4k cinematics, meaning you can now delete the Movies_4k folder. While still having all the 4k movie files inside your default Movies folder. The game doesn't know the difference. Now you can launch the game and the 4k cutscenes will play just fine since those are the only files you have.

NR you're dumb.
Thanks so much! This is such a weird solution but i tested it and it does indeed work.

I've been noticing a lot of Games have been upscaling low res Cinematics
to become 4K on the Screen in Game...

But the reality is, they have always been low res from the start...

You could prove it by simply just looking at the Videos in the Folders of the Game...

A 4K Patch for this, really just does some kind of filter or something?
I can't really seem to find a good solution to this problem...

I noticed that 4K Patch usually ends up with a low res 320x240 Video
be more like 640x480 Video... No where near 4K at all... But the Filters
might make you believe it's 4K, though if you don't notice it...
That's beyond the point.
What they did on their video files to achieve a better quality was not the matter in question. The matter was how to make the higher quality video files to be played in game.
The solution I found is above your post.

1st: Mortal Kombat 11 isn't the only Game doing this... I explained it in my post above...
---->> Mortal Kombat 11 can't tell the difference, because they technically are the same Files from the very start... It doesn't matter if you use SD or 4K, their the same Files...

It doesn't know the difference, because their the same Files... o_@

--------------------------------

Either way your looking at it? You won't get True 4K from them,
because it's still Upscaling them... The Customer is getting the
short hand of the stick, & is being lied to about the Games their Playing...

That should technically be a Crime... Your lied to about what your buying...

-------------------------------------

Unless someone can actually verify that these are indeed really 4K Videos,
& not Upscaled low res 480P Videos? I wouldn't trust that they are...

Jump Force & Biomutant both are doing the same thing in their Games...
So is Dynasty Warriors 9 & all the Resident Evil ReMakes...

Again...none of this matters on this thread. It was about getting the 4k pack working in game.

Howerver, you are blatantly wrong in this case. They are not the same file. You can examine them yourself. The same cutscene in the Movies folder that is only 400MB in size is over 1GB in the Movies_4k folder. You can also see the resolution of the video encode and the date. The original cutscenes were encoded in 2019 and are 1920x1080 and the same one in the 4k folder is encoded in 2020 and are 3640x2160.

And if you play both files, the sharpness and quality of the 4k one is quite clearly superior. Whether NR re-rendered all those cutscenes in native 4k or used an upscaler is irrelevant. The 4k ones look substantially better.

Again, this thread is just about how to make the files play in game. You're getting off topic with your rant. If you think they look the same.. great. Then you don't even have to worry about it.

Oh, your looking for Solutions on getting it to work? Ya, I've known this the whole time...
I realized it way back when I think the MK11 Game was released after playing around a
bit with Jump Force & it's Files...

Movies folder that is only 400MB in size is over 1GB in the Movies_4k folder

If they were not the same Files? STEAM would see this, & actually Flag this as a problem
requiring you to Re-Install the Game... Their bigger in size, because even though their
the same exact Videos, the Resolution is probably only a small bit bigger in Size...
I bet the large size is prob due to UnCompression Vs. Compression... I'm not exactly sure
how STEAM actually functions over Video Files, but from my understanding, a Single File
missing usually makes STEAM Re-Install entire Games... If it doesn't do this? There has to
be a reason, or it's due to it already existing somewhere else in the Game Files...
GuRu Asaki, move along now. You just keep saying stuff that doesn't matter.

Riiight.. except the 4k pack came out a year after the game's release. You know nothing.

Besides..
but from my understanding
Your understanding is wrong.. if things were they way you think they are, modding games would be impossible.

Nothing makes Steam re-install the entire game. Games can still launch with missing files. If a crucial file is missing, steam will redownload that file only, not the entire game.

Replacing files for modded ones with different sizes is nothing new and the game nor steam will flag it as long as the name is the same.

You're clearly trying too hard to talk about stuff you know very little about.
Thank you so much! I thought they would have fixed this problem by now, but after checking with Ansel, the game was still using the 1080p movies. Thanks to you, now I can enjoy my 4k movies while also saving up some storage lmao.
