Look-up the "Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection" on Greenman Gaming. You can get a Steam key for $10! The reason this game isn't sold anymore is because it uses Games For Windows Live (GFWL) DRM, which the servers were shut down a loooong time ago, so it won't get past the splash screen unless you download a fix for it.

Here's a link to the Steam community forum for that game, so you can see what you'll be getting into, in terms of fixes. I forget what I did, but I do have this game working on my Windows 10 PC.

It includes Mortal Kombat 1, 2, and Ultimate MK3, btw (arcade versions)

Nice tip! Also just noticed that Mortal Kombat 4 is on there too!

what about mk trilogy?

That game was only on PS1, N64, and PC-DOS. It never came to PSN or GOG, from what I can tell. If you have an old console (PS1, PS2, the first PS3 model I think, or N64), you can get a copy on eBay for $10-$30 depending. Otherwise, Ultimate MK3 in the Arcade Kollection (on Greenman Gaming) is the closest you're going to get...

Also, not sure how legal "abandonware" is (although its name suggests that the rights have been completely abandoned), but I think the PC-DOS version is uploaded online under that category. Getting it to work, however, is a whole 'nother thing. I haven't personally tried, but in general I've had HORRIBLE luck with DOS games in the past (thanks Steam for selling me games that don't work on modern PCs!), even after using a DOS emulator, so...yeah.

Last I heard, all the good emulator sites got taken down, and the only ones left are kinda fishy. Personally, I think you should just grab the $1.50 GOG trilogy for now, and then get the Greenman Gaming Steam version later when it goes on sale for $2.50.

I was really feeling nostalgic when I bought the Arcade Kollection, but I only ended up playing it for 10 minutes before I lost interest, lol. I definitely loved these games at the time (second to Killer Instinct and Tekken), but they didn't age well, IMHO.

Anyway, I think playing one of these classic games for a sec will help you decide if you wanna pursue this further.

Before you recommend that, I bought the GOG version of MK1 + 2 + 3 trilogy. Problem is that is the DOS version, which is no where close to the arcade version. There are very noticible differences. Like in the Shang throne rooms, you look out the window, you see nothing. I can go on and on.

The best version on PC ever should be the "Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection". Except I am afraid to buy it cause I don't think it will work if you tried to activate it in 2020.

Hmm, thanks for the heads up! Also, just to test it out, I went ahead and re-installed the Arcade Kollection on my current Win10 desktop PC. Here's how it went:

  • First I followed the instructions that the OP of this thread posted : https://steamcommunity.com/app/205350/discussions/0/2846795319622087023/
  • But then I couldn't get past the start screen, so I followed this highlighted response in this thread:
    https://steamcommunity.com/app/205350/discussions/0/2846795319615224509/
  • Started the game and it works perfectly! Even had my Hori Fighting Commander controller (PS4 version) working great. Supports keyboard or Xbox controller otherwise. My fight stick (Qanba Drone for PS3/PS4) wouldn't work because Steam kept loading-in some community profile that only had the block button mapped, even though I repeatedly told it to use my own config (wtf???), but then again, my stick has been giving me problems with older games in general (but only in the past year and half, for some reason, on my laptop too).

Some other tips:

  • The online component doesn't work because it uses the now-defunct Games for Windows Live (GFWL)
  • When it says "achievements", that's referring to the GFWL achievements (these are actually Xbox achievements that you add to your Xbox account gamerscore, basically the forerunner for the current Windows 10 games). There are NO Steam Achievements (or wallpaper, or badges/cards or anything like that. This game is straight from 2011)
  • There are some threads in the community forum that talk about getting GFWL to work (and thus online and achievements), but I haven't tried that and will definitely not try it
  • Definitely change the controls, because the punch and kick buttons are all in the wrong place
  • On the main menu, you need to press left and right to cycle through the games (the arcade cabinets on the right will rotate)
  • If you press the select button during fights, you can see your selected character's special moves and fatalities (and even some basic combos for UMK3)

Fun nostalgia trip, actually, lol. I might actually spend some time with this one, see if I can pull off some of the crazy combos I've seen online.

Also...geez, I used to think GOG did some upgrades on all the games they sold to make sure they work on Windows 10, but I guess that's not true! I heard the Silent Hill 4 port they just released was also just the original 2004 PC version without any compatibility fixes. And from the look of the Mortal Kombat 4 screenshots, that one definitely doesn't look like it's an arcade port either!

I'll definitely think twice about buying from them again, lol. Luckily they have the same refund policy as Steam, I believe (less than 2 hours = get all your money back).

Nah, don't waste your money/time on the pathetic GOG versions. I wonder why people still bother recommending that shill since it's just the old inferior PC ports running on DOSbox emulator.

I got the Arcade Kollection, btw. It's shame that online's literally dead, since i lived long enough to remember how that tough as nails/cheapo AI ripped me off of my coins in arcades, lol.

TC said legal way. Since when was ripping content without author's permission considered legal?
