MK 9/ 10/ 11 are a series, consistant story across them through the story modes. they are zombies cuz they did die.

They were killed in mk9 and got ressurected as revenants by Quan Chi, Some skins like Johnny's revenant skin are noncannon because he never died.

It isn't a callback as Sonya and Cassie have revenant skins as well. They were simply added in for a Kombat League season.

Yeah in MK: Deadly Alliance Shang Tsung Killed him (with the help of Quan Chi) and then subsequently in MK Deception his body is reanimated by Raiden

Well if you played MKX, you can see in the first chapter that some of the previous MK9 cast is formed by revenants enslaved in the Netherealm. And I don't want to spoil the story for you, but I'll sugest you to purcase Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition (or MK9 called by the community) from key resellers to activate it, because you'll not find it at least now directly on Steam, and there in the Story Mode you'll find all your answers, it's a great value to your library so check it.
