In what Tier you put Kung Lao?
I'love his fight style!

Very interesting question. First of all, I want to say that most of the popular pro-gamers ala Sonic Fox put Kun Lao either in the top (S, S-, A + ranks). They say that Kun Lao is cool and generally imba. Only now, surprise-surprise, these coolest players never choose Kun Lao in serious championships. That is, "yes, he’s cool, but I won’t play with him." Pretty hypocritical. Kun Lao was abandoned by Foxy Grandpa. Other Kun-mainers such as Skar are transplanted to Sonya, Shan Song and Johnny. Why? For one simple reason: you can win with Kung Lao only if you are superior to your opponent. If you meet an equal opponent, you will not win. Kun Lao has no overheads. The only variation that is played in the championships is very resource intensive. Half of the combo attacks start with the top attack. This is ridiculous, but all that Kun Lao can do in battle and not get punished is "forward + 1." It's all. Therefore, the battle for Kun Lao comes down to: you poke the enemy and try to throw him. Because you have nothing else. Everything else is punished.
You can learn to play for Kung Lao day and night. And then Jackie comes and defeats you. Because she has all the hits faster, safer and output to combos. Or Jade comes and hits you with a stick because her stick are longer. Or Johnny and Liu Kang come and throw you with fireballs, because your projectite is very slow. That is, if you want to make Kun Lao your main - no problem. You will easily defeat newcomers. But only with them. An equal opponent will win you, because his hero is easier to play.
My advice to you: Wait Fujin. According to the video, it will be an analogue of Kun-Lao, but with overheads, a bunch of kb and dynamics. You will not only fight beautifully, but also win.

I recommend you play a character you like instead of one you want to win with. If "winning" is all you're after, the game isn't gonna be fun, since unless you've put hundreds of hours into "top tier" characters and follow the meta, you're going to lose online. Lose a lot!

I find it's a lot more fun to play as someone you like and focus on getting better with them. And when you lose, at least it's with a character you can relate to, or a character you love in some way.

Also, as baraboolka suggested, you're not going to be playing against master players online 99% of the time, so I don't know that the tier list even applies to non-pro gamers, lol. For example, SonicFox put Scorpion in the lower tier, and you never see Scorpion in the pro tournaments, but for newbie-friendly character, he dominates. I get brutally beaten by Scorpion all the time online, lol, even when I use top-tier characters like Geras, Cetrion, and Frost (my mains...I like Kronika and her cronies, lol).

Tier lists simply don't apply to new and intermediate players, IMHO!
