I haven't tried a legit SNES controller or SNES style d-pad in over 20 years though. But if the SNES style d-pad was better for fighting, then I might go with an SNES controller for some fighting games.
I don't know if I'd say it's better that they poke through in four places. I don't think that has that much of a bearing on it and overall the PS4 d-pad feels pretty mushy. There is actually a mod for the PS4 d-pad to have four individual buttons instead of a single piece, but I don't know how that would actually feel. Personally, I'd prefer it if the PS4 d-pad sit a little higher above the face of the controller.
I may try my PS1 controller with MK11 because the d-pad is better than the PS4, and the digital L2/R2 buttons are quicker than triggers.
I'm wondering if a more proper SNES d-pad would be good for these games. If so, then I could get something like an 8bitdo SN30 (without the thumbsticks) and figure out a double mapping scheme on Steam to make up for the loss of a couple buttons. Or replace my PS4 controller with the SN30 Pro+.
I won't regret the PS1 controller or getting something with a proper SNES style d-pad?
Right. There are just 3 models of the SN30 I am looking at. The straight SNES style, no analog. This means I'd have to double up on a mapping or two somehow if there isnt a button combination that does the same thing. There's also the pro, with thumbsticks, and the pro+, with thumbsticks and handles. Personally, for d-pad games I don't like having the extra weight of thumbsticks, rumble motors, etc.
