Kotal Kahn, too much soy?
I don't get this character in story-mode, every one beats him and he seems to be a pretty useless leader. I haven't played prev games, maybe he's not a pansy in 10?

Shao Kahn seemed like a legitimately stronger leader. Why was he bad again? The story doesn't seem to explain why other than he looks abit evil.

Well, if you've never played any of the previous MK games, you'd probably not know why Shao Kahn is evil... the short answer is he's a prick... the Long Answer is, in MK 2 he and Shang Tsung were pretty much working together to try and take over Earthrealm through Mortal Kombat which is a tournament the Elder Gods created in order for Earthrealm to effectively defend itself from invasion, but after shang tsung failed to win the 1st tournament, he then asked Shao Khan for another chance to host another tournament where in turn the warriors would have to fight Shao Kahn instead...

The whole premise is Shao Kahn is wanting to take over Earthrealm, tho they might've slightly altered his agenda from MK 9 onwards...

Yea, but isn't outworld basically like medieval times? Or even further back, comparable to Rome?

Would you not objectively have to be brutal just to survive?

Kotal Kahn does seem pretty lame in this game. Considering he has been saved by his woman several times, really makes you doubt whether he’s fit to be a kahn or not.

I mean few people can even manage to last a few seconds against Shao Kahn. I agree that Jade whooping Kotal Kahn's ass felt really weird. At the time I figured it was being fed into by the agenda they got going for the game. As far as Jade's and Kotal's arc is concerned Kotal Kahn was being set up as the ideal strong but vulnerable, attentive and conscientious, non-controlling couple man.

Jade is also Edenian, they're supposed to like the Tolkien Elves of Mortal Kombat almost, and Jade is supposed to be an enforcer type. So she's basically supposed to be like the Edenian version of Goro.

Kotal Kahn still goes toe to toe with Shao Kahn which pretty much only Liu Kang, Raiden, MK6 era Scorpion, and in recent times Johnny Cage could manage to do.

and probably Kung Lao

Well in MKX he got beat by a teenager so I guess he was always weak... Not only that but he should have or rather could have died. Not sure how he is Khan either.

My God man is this how you spend your life? Youre everywhere with the soy talk, obsessing about these evil beans that have...turned Shao Khan into a bad guy in Mortal Kombat? Upside down world! Good gravy, get help before you use those guns on a synagogue!

And one of the biggest problems is the inconsistent power level of characters, which also ends up making the villains feel weak as all hell.
I mean....... MKX started with the villain getting his ass kicked, just saying...
Not only that, but he got his ass kicked by the '' power of love ''.
People can go on about how Johnny is a descendant of these super warriors and all that but it still doesn't change the fact that he beat the main villain at the start of the game with the power of love ( does this make MK an Anime? ) and then his daughter who is a hipster beats him again the same way even tho he's supposedly basically invincible.
Oooh one thing that annoyed me is how in MKX it's apparently the first time Johnny summoned up the green glow... you know... except every single fight in the actual game part since MK1.
It's the same thing with Ken in Street Fighter. in game he can do everything Ryu can, in stories he can't even summon a hadoken... wut?
Fighting games in general have a big dissonance between the gameplay and the storylines.

MKX is a reboot of the series so they could do that.

No, MK9 was and he could do the green glow in all the fights there too.

Kotal Kahn was lame in X too, getting beat up by everyone and making stupid decisions is his thing.
I think he's suppose to represent Polygon readers/Reseterausers or something.
Where it's ok not to exhibit toxic masculinity, even though it makes you useless and inept.

Shao Kahn is basically Donald Trump with a hammer. The writers probably thought it would be good leftist propaganda, but he's actually awesome.

Ok. Let's not get political here. I rather video game just keep being video game. I don't think any character is supposed to be represented as certain person in real life.

A leader isn't someone that can beat everyone. A leader is someone that can unite people. Kotal was becoming more like Shao Kahn because he was ruling by making people fear him. Kitana was the one that united the different factions and that's why she became Kahn.
