Final level (spoilers)

I just beat the game, but just when I was about to get to the final boss a ghost appeared and gave me the "ultimate sword", which I didn't pick 'cause I did not know if it would affect the ending at all.

What's the deal with the sword? and the ghost?

I beat it on Normal this afternoon (Switch) on Normal mode. I imagine the "Ultimate Sword" was because I put the matching weapon types into atleast 10 checkpoints. (Which cause Pegasus to arrive)

Weapon type apparently doesn't matter for ultimate sword. I didn't even think about putting the matching weapon type in until level 3, and about halfway through the game I just started putting dirks and ninjato in every single checkpoint and still got it. I never encountered a Pegasus, however.
