I feel pretty confident about doing the early-game "right".
By that I mean up until the point where I have 2 heros and 30 supply.

After that I find it really difficult to determine what the best strategy is. I guess it is highly situational. But assuming a 1v1 vs. a Hell-AI I feel that I rather slack with the building-upgrades than neglecting my army-buildup.

I feel that the step for the final tier (400 gold) is really huge and difficult to judge when to save for.

Currently it feels like you have to exploit the fact that the AI spread their units all over the place by decicively attacking their castles. Particularly the one they start with.

It's basically a race against time. If you can take it before the AI is done conquering the rest of the map you win. If not, you lose. This also means. The bigger the map, the easier it is.

I'll try to beat Heaven after my current game.

A general tip for game settings: Turn off dragons and gods. In my opinion they just potentially ruin the game.

Thanks :)

Ail, your early game routine: What do you take first with wisdom, and what as first building in the palace.

What is your first hammer upgrade on units. Do you put items on units early on?

Tutorial recommends +12 wisdom, and town hall. That means, gold comes late. My feeling is more for gold, but I am a rookie.

Well it depends on the size of the map. On smaller maps you need less research, less hammers for upgades and castle levels quicker, wheras the cost for units and buildings remains constant.

On bigger maps I start with +12 Research on smaller ones with +12 gold.

You have to look at the gold-income once your castle gets close to level 2. At that moment you will want to save for getting the main-building to level 2 immediately and then save up for the second hero to start getting XP on it.

I think getting the town-hall at level 1 of the castle and the market at level 2 is also a no-brainer.

The problem with giving items to your units early on is that you usually want to use the hammers to upgrade them first.

When you eventually itemize them, make sure to put flat-stat-increase-items on cheap units and percentage-items on more expensive ones. For the Steam-faction I'm not sure whether you should put any items on your units at all, as they have a tech that can get your hammers converted into gold 1:1.

For other factions it would be useless to hoard hammers so might aswell spend them. But for Steam it seems it's better to produce more gold... after doing the unit-upgrades that is. They are way to important to pass on them.

Another intersting aspect is that your gold-income can't become negative. Even if your maintainance is bigger than your income, you'll come out with 0 gold/turn. So saving up gold to then make a huge army in a short amount of time is better than constantly making new troops. But of course if you need them to defend you can't save up at the same time.

Good points, thanks.

So size "L" is more a - what you called - bigger map. This means wisdom first.

OMG, I thought I did quite well.
Had 1v1 (both humans) on L map (hard difficulty), did really concentrated the right thing at the right time (as I thought). My heroes were really strong.

But when I met AI, my beloved heroes had even difficulty against their tier 1 units.
And enemy had knights (omg). ! :(

(that was after 55 turns) . . . . . I better get back to "medium"

In what way did you meet the AI? Did you give up? Because I found that even if you lose an encounter, unless the map is already taken over, the AI does not really press for the win and you can even rebuild and still win in some scenarios.

Also games can go very differently from game to game. And I might overestimate the meaning of the result of my most recently finished game. (Win on Hell in Steam vs Steam Medium Plains-Map)

Currently I'm playing a Human vs Human on the same kind of map... on Heaven. I'm looking forward to see what'll happen once I meet them! :D

I am glad you ask, Ail
In what way I met the AI ? As soon as I saw their border (they seeing my border also) they rushed with 3 heroes, a knight and some more units of all sizes.

Attacking a hero or the knight was like I loose 107, they loose 7 hp.
While I had 6 buildings in cities (statistics say so, I thought I had more), AI had 36.

No hope to coninue, really.

Next try: Same setting, but map M and difficulty "medium".
They came after 25 turns. Statistics were about equal (me 5 buildings, they had 3).
But units were incredible strong. Not like in previous game (hard), but still x-fold stronger than mine. I cannot imagine how AI gets this in such short time.

Im a little desperate ... :(

Hi Ail, I really would be interested in some saves of your games on high difficulties.

It sounds to me I would have taken part in an olympic Marathon (in my best youth time being a really good runner), and keeping the speed ot the champion, I had to give up after 500m. LOL

It's really hard to say from the outside what's going wrong.
AI only cheats with the money, their units are the same as yours and so it depends on upgrades, items, tech and level how strong they are.

I have a better idea than the savegame-thing.

I could do a Let's Play showcasing a whole game.
I actually have recorded one before but I didn't feel it was any good, as the last hour or so was just the dragon killing the AI-units that were trying to kill me.

Also I think that my one victory on Hell could be a lucky outlier and does not by any means mean that I can repeat it at will. I had moved up to playing on Hell ever since I first beat Hard and lost like 4 games in a row (with the exception of an FFA, which was significantly easier).

So my idea is to play another game on Hell, Medium Map, 1v1 without gods and dragons and record it.
While losing is more likely than winning, at least it should showcase what I think is playing "correctly".

I really appreciate this. You are such a good help :) :) :)

just a funny occurence with AI: My hero was wounded, standing face to face with a strong neutral unit.

Then, an enemy hero came, stood just beside me. omg I thougt, will not survive this turn. What happended next ?? . . . . . . . . . . Enemy hero killed the neutral.

... with a face looking like "I saved your ass - you are welcome"

Edit: I wrote "a s s", whats with this hearts about ??

Point 4 in my list of AI-improvement-suggestions:

"4. AI should always prioritize attacking units of other factions over neutral ones. Especially when they are in the territory of an enemy."

We are being ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ censored!

I get better, map L, diff. medium (100%) 1v1 humans. And it was fun :)
My building and units stats equal or better than AI.

AI is still better at tactics in the final battlefield. And - I have the feeling, they have a bonus on unity-strength, even on medium. Can anyone confirm that?
My knights were knocked out easily.

Concerning AI fighting neutrals: Sometimes it makes even sense. Inside the battlefield there was a neutral "Big Mama" (1000hp) guarding a castle. AI took her out, so they had no problem with fresh unit-supplies and regeneration. But it may be a random side effect, not a strategic aiming by AI programming.
