How do i pet the creatures?

I want to pet the cute little bird balls but all I can do is kick them.... Help :(

Unfortunately, your only options are to feed them, shoot them, or kick them. I too wish I could give them a nice pat on their bulbous head-bodies or even pick one up, but it is not to be.
