Why does the player make such weird sounds?
Seriously, the sounds you make when running or jumping sound like an animal. Are you actually playing as a humanoid alien? It sounds like a bull snorting or dog whining.

...

Did I do this to myself by selecting a dog photo in the beginning?

Actually, you probably did lol. That is the type of humor this game has. I played as the pedo looking guy and I never heard any strange sounds.

Yup. That's exactly what happened. Did it to myself first time I played too. You get used to it. :steamhappy:

Same here... never heard of it until it just magically appeared yesterday. It seems to help fill the massive void left by Subnautica. XD

Now that I know it really is a dog, it makes a lot more sense. It's kind of... endearing? I now picture myself as a bipedal dog... or at least a human with the head of a dog. I guess either option is just as likely in this game lolol.

I'm reviving this thread because i cannot find a way to change it. It took all of 30 seconds to figure out what had happened.. tried to see if i could live with it, now i'm some time in and am sick of the dog panting noises.

I chose the dog because I thought I was being clever and a little funny, but then I started hearing sounds in game, it didn't take until about 30 minutes in, confusing about what I was hearing, then I'm like, it's because I chose the dog isn't it, wish there was an ability to change it, well, for me it wouldn't have really mattered, I would have kept it, I'd just assume a human character would just be making grunts, just it'd be fun to hear all the different unique sounds each one makes

If not for anything but a reference on a possible name or character change for change in voices, what may or may not work as it didn't really bother me too much, but if it works, surely someone can respond that it did/didn't work, would help knowing that as well, or if not notepad specifically, what program could work for the change if that in itself is an issue

I just checked the save file that I had, which is in LOCAL of APPDATA under the TOWERS folder, within my save, using notepad to check the data, I searched (CTRL+F) for DOG and only one option came up

DO MAKE A BACKUP SAVE
Cannot stress this enough, copy your save and save it in a different location, that way if anything goes wrong, you can just put it back

Since I don't know if this will work or not, I'm fine with how my gameplay is, I already beat the game and the DLC

It may be possible to change it, but I tried looking up possible character names on the web, nothing came up, if you wish to change your character, my tip is to start a new game on a new save file, choose the character you want, have it save, then check that save in notepad and find the name similar to where you found the name of DOG in your main save and then put that name where DOG is in your main save

Hopefully it works out for you, Good Luck & Have Fun :smiling:

i picked the dog and it was really cute hearing his sounds imo

I'm also chose the dog and that sound when someone hits you or ypou fall from a cliff is tearing my heart apart :chuchelwhy:
Also didn't realize it at first.
I wish I could change it because I'm 1/4 into game and don't want to start over..

I picked the dog playing on Steam Deck (first time playing). Thanks to no cloud saves I had to start over on my Desktop and decided to not torture myself with whimpering and panting this time.

Nah, yah don't.

The first task given to the player is to submit a report (i.e. navigate a GUI survey). The first question asked of the player is to choose an avatar profile image... in a first person game (this image is never displayed again, as far as I can tell). In fact, you are effectively choosing a "voice pack" for your in-game avatar. The interface offers ten choices, nine of which result in either a generic male or generic female voice, plus a single meme "dog noises" option. The trouble is, none of this "voice pack" business is telegraphed to the player. I presumed I was just picking a DOOM/Carmageddon-styled image for the sake of flair (and yes, these throwbacks are mildly relevant, seeing as the game goes headfirst into faux-VHS effects).

Anyway, now it seems like I'm stuck listening to annoying dog yelps for the rest of the game, as I don't wish to erase my game progress and there is no option to change "voice pack". 1/10 stars from me. Game is otherwise interesting.

Looking back, I actually really appreciate this... I've told this story to lots of people, and they all thought it was hilarious.

But... I do agree, it would be nice if there was something to interact with that would let you change your avatar, if only to give you the option of changing the dog sounds. They could even make it into another joke, like next time you die, they say "oops, something went wrong making a new copy of you... you may notice weird side effects like body hair in places you didn't used to have it, or a completely different voice..."
