We Who Are About To Die

We Who Are About To Die

I think I am too stupid.
I really like the idea of the game, the theme, the everthing, really. I watched a "lets play" and I was immediatly on fire.

But: I guess I am too stupid. I play on trainee difficulty, and I cant get further than week 7. Mostly I die at week 5 already. No money, broken equipment, low health - I just dont know.

Have you tried playing as a blacksmith apprentice? Equipments in auxiliary inventory will automatically be fixed for free. As for the health, you've got to heal yourself by hiring physician. Also on matches with the traits "Spoils of the victor", I'd recommend not to bring any weapons to these matches so that you can just get the weapons from the arena and you get to keep them if you win the match. Hope these little tips help :)

what backstory do you main?

also did you skip the tutorial and the guide? it holds some very crucial information that you will probably won't figure out alone for a while

Hi! Thank you for your help.

I don't play a specific backstory since it always chances and I thought, you need to build advantages after every run for the next run. If I reroll, I loose them, right?

I played the tutorial, of course, an I understand, how to use the weapon, but I never get through enemys shield/defence.

I know, that I need to hire a physician, but even if you need two heals, it is already 500g, and after the 5th week or so, I need a second set of gear due to repairs.

For training, always go for normal intensity and first priority stamina, since this seems to be the mainproblem. But still I am running low very fast.

I have read "spoils to the Victor" seems to be a reasonable technique, I will try that. But still IMHO I think the game is too hard - either the combat is too hard (to detailed hit boxes) or the permanent reqward/bonus after several runs are too low.

not playing a specific backstory is a bit of a mistake here, as a new player's best friend is the aspirant, it's by far the best backstory for new players, and has no major weakness asides of less fame,

as for the enemy shields, use something like an axe and swing overhead, if the enemy shield isn't big then the axe head will reach the enemies skull before the handle hits the shield, shields are difficult to get through but there is a way to counter them without axes, by pressing f you can force the enemy back and if the attack hits (deals no dmg) it will stun the enemy and leave them open for a stab to the chest for a brief moment, they will still have their shields but said shield will only defend from attacks to their left, flails are also good and are by far the best anti shield weapon but takes a bit of learning.

if you have to hire a medic every run practice your blocking, if you are using classic camera then hold right click when the cursor is on top of the enemy weapon. , if you are using third person then use your head as the cursor.
as for repairs, do not go for spoils to the victor if its early into the game, the enemy weapons will be no better then yours and will probably have less durability, if you need to repair and you don't have secondary weapons and not alot of gold, if you have a bit of fame you can try re role the matches for one with insurance, this will also reset the medic cost back to 500, or you can fund raise for a bit of gold, this is especially crucial if you are a slave because even tho the scollo will take 50% of ur fund raising, you will probably have a decent chunk of fame.

as for training, never go for normal intensity, it never pays off and you will end up with worse stamina. go for the maximum instead, you will end up with less stamina when you train but it will start making a massive difference if you survive, if you are bad at stam management go for many vs 1 or many vs many or pit fights, the ai will do the heavy lifting.

this game is punishing, learning takes time, it is called we who are about to die afterall, it took me hours of death to figure out what is what and how to get the most out of my weapons and stuff. the important thing is that death is part of the experience, don't be sad when you die, even the best of the best spend most of their time on characters that die

I have found that swinging from low right and manually aiming the camera from that angle will result in an upward swing that will go below the enemy's shield and into his leg. Its pretty good because often they don't have very good leg armor.

I've been doing a bit better now and I prioritize upgrading the healer and not being cheap with healing my character. Doing the maximum amount of training early on stamina. And getting good armor vs getting good weapons (be careful about helmets though, they seem to be bugged right now and break very easily).

Yeah, the shields are a pain to get behind. I try to avoid those 1v1 battles in which you can usually reveal what your opponent has, whether a shield and sword or just a 2h weapon. the 1v1 with 2h weapon opponents are a lot easier. I can get behind the shields fairly well with a backhand of certain swords or poking over their shield for a headshot with a spear or a trident. The farthest I've made it is like week 15. I like to try the different backgrounds for a variety of gameplay.

Thanks for all your effort and tricks, but I decided to leave the game for now and a while, since it was too frustrating - for me. It is a personal taste and has nothing to say about the game of course. It is great work of the dev, for sure, but maybe too great for me :)

same , i will leave the game and hope in future that the developer make more progress on it , i couldn't refund cause sadly i got sick last night so i forgot to close down the game and left it open for 8 hours. right now it feels like similar to bennett with the controls, that it just is pure RNG .

If you ever decide to try again, best hint I can give is to buy maximum training upgrades every week early on whenever you can. You don't want to reach mid-level with low stamina or it starts feeling impossible to win.
