Other might be able to explain it better than me. Maybe the patch notes in question can even be dug out somehow.. if Steam didn't delete them.
But yeah.. ♥♥♥♥ was wild.. and don't buy Domina, unless you're okay with supporting someone who is mentally highly unstable and spreading harmful messages.
IIRC they got banned from their own game's forums initially. But he kept his meltdown going by reporting legit reviews of his game as fraudulent, and I believe the last straw was when they updated the game with a transphobic rant in the patch notes.
Separate the art from the artist. One of the best games I've played. Still play it YEARS later.
Sure, Domina is a great game, I totally agree. Would I buy it again? after that meltdown? Probably not. But that's also something everyone has to decide for themselves.
So maybe calling for a boycott is too much, I'll agree with you on that point.
Also gaming media portrayed the Domina-case in an incorrect way, imo. The trans-phobic rant was just they nail in the coffin, the thing that made Steam drop the hammer on him. But it wasn't like he got banned just because he wrote something bad about trans people once (like many articles make it sound).
He added weird stuff to his patch notes for weeks, months. He really popped off and ran his mouth, so to speak. Outed himself as an anti-masker / anti-vaxxer (in the midst of the pandemic), some stuff that gave off incel and sexist vibes, giving people (unwanted) life and career advice and so on. I think there were even one or two posts where he linked to conspiracy videos on some weird-ass platforms (not youtube).
The sad thing is that many people were supportive of him and tried to make him see how destructive his behaviour was, especially towards himself and his income. Telling him stuff like: "Look dude, it's obvious that you're in a bad place. Maybe take a couple of steps back, get some help and rethink if this is really such a smart move? And please don't insert politics into the patch notes. We play games on here to escape real life for a couple of hours. So please, chill. Your game is fun, don't ruin it be doing stupid stuff and going on a personal crusade."
The dev received plenty of support with good intentions. But yeah.. he wouldn't listen at all and dug the hole deeper with every post instead.. so eventually he forced Valve's / Steam's hand to ban him completely. Can't blame them for it. What can you do if someone is playing with fire and just won't stop?
On the plus side: the management aspects of We Who Are About To Die surprised me. I initially thought this would just be a combat simulator. But it's actually kind of similar to Domina, just with 3D combat and direct control. Which is nice.
The developer could of used that advice and maybe the game would still be listed on steam. I don't think it's a good enough game to follow the developer to another platform and buy the game again. I hope for those who did buy it on another platform won't one day see it removed some day in the future over some drama. In my eyes now it is an abandoned game in my steam library. The good news for me is that now there is a lot of good gladiator games to fill the space that Domina left.
I would give the developer a lot of credit for creating Domina. I would also say as a consumer I was also betrayed by the developer because of the actions he took the game is abandoned on the platform I purchased on. So yea I was disgusted by that. I don't even care about what a person believes I personally avoid all things of that nature on purpose but when it comes to conducting business the developer failed and in that area I don't trust him and I won't ever do anymore business with him.
In reality it's more that he said things people disagreed with and proceeded to review bomb his game. Also ROFL at saying he spread "Conspiracy theories" when what he said has turned out to be true after the fact.
I will make the concession that he probably should've reacted differently to that part and not get into spats with people.
Exactly this. Cancel Culture is probably the most annoying ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I've seen spring up since I've been alive. And I've seen the entire decade of the 90s come and go, so that is saying something because the 90s had some weird annoying ♥♥♥♥.
I was curious about the game because I was looking at We Who Are About To Die, and I still have the Domina game in my Library. I remember someone saying something about a gladiator game that got removed from Steam for some controversy and did a Google search. These comments popped up.
The patch notes are very much still visible for me lol. I never realized this happened as I never read patch notes. The last patch, 1.3.23 BETA has names with links to videos on BitChute about the vaccine and such.
1.3.22 BETA talks about BESTIARIUS and how you can upgrade lions and such, but then talks about how the Medicus won't turn you into a woman even "if you're a man who has inverted his penis".
This ♥♥♥♥ is wild lol.
edit:unless you pirated the game of course
